Many posters on the board have mentioned that it's not about this season, it's about where we are five years down the road.

If that's the case, why risk further injury to Oden? Just do the surgery now so he's ready for the start of the regular season next year.

Am I right? What's the point in playing him now? We're not going to win a championship this year. Right?

Because we're 4th in the WEST, 3 games from Denver and winning the division?

So he can improve, so he can gain experience in the NBA, so he can grow with our team, to try and make a playoff push and gain valuable experience for the team.

We weren't going to win the championship no matter the trade (that was most likely available for LaFrentz), but our goal is still to make the playoffs...

Of course we WANT to win the title, but trade or not it wasn't going to happen.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
It's always about this season and future seasons. You try to achieve as much as possible this season without unduly hurting future seasons. What constitutes "unduly" is opinion.

Unless Oden has an injury that will get worse with more play, I don't think playing him affects the future negatively.

And even if the team's record matters not at all, Oden will only improve through playing.

I sense you're trying to be bitter and sarcastic, but I really don't understand the target.

By the same logic: why watch Blazer games at all if you think there's a chance of them losing?

C'mon dude, do you honestly think we are a title contender? Why are we playing him? Just so we can win a couple games in a first-round series? Just shut him down. I want a healthy Oden for five years down the road when we are challenging for a championship!

Were we going to be a title contender with say Vince Carter at SF? I highly doubt it. We wouldn't be as good as LA or SA. You can make the same arguement if we made a trade... If we aren't a title contender, then why even play Carter/RJ? Might as well rest them for 3 years until our core is ready to compete, right?

Honest question for you, PapaG ... when do you think the Blazers will be in their "Championship window"?

I think some are just too pissed off at missing a good opportunity that some irrational behavior is coming out.

Did I say anything about Vince Carter? This thread is about Greg Oden.

But if you want to talk about trades, I truly think improving our situation at the 3 could have cemented our HCA for the playoffs so we could have avoided playing LA or San Antonio in the first round. And you could have put us down for a competitive first round and perhaps a run in the second round. At least some playoff success for our core group of guys.

Please tell me how getting swept in the first round by LA or SA is going to help our development?

I don't know if they will ever be, but I'm positive that adding Vince Carter would not have made a difference in terms of a championship this season. I'm still wondering who are the "many posters" who said this season doesn't matter, but 5 years down the road does matter. Would you link to them so I can ask them why? I think that is crazy talk from crazy people.

Actually this thread is about the "many posters" who said that this season doesn't matter. I am wondering why shutting down Oden is a good idea. If there are "many posters" who feel this way, perhaps you can explain to them how they are wrong.

But we wouldn't be title contenders... so why play? If your stance is that without a trade we won't make the playoffs, fine. But you made a thread stating just because we didn't make a trade we should sit Oden the rest of the year and not even try, which is silly. We wouldn't be title contenders no matter what.

Its not the end of the world that we didn't make a trade, dude. We lost a nice trade piece, but I think we will still try and make something happen during the summer.

How do you know that Vince Carter was the only legitimate deal that was out there? If you can criticize those of us who are upset we didn't make a deal, using the logic "you really don't know what deals were being talked about anyway" then that same logic applies to the other side. For all we know, there could have been numerous deals that the majority of us would see as "no-brainers."

I take the statement from KP "I must have traded over 1,000 emails with Paul Allen over the past week" to mean that there were more deals on the table than just the VC one that most people were talking about.

Someone hack into KP's email and get those emails to see what kind of offers were there.. I'd love to see it.
