I was watching the news a while ago and I got to thinking, how come New York has two teams for almost each sport. Basketball New York Knicks and New York Nets Baseball New York Mets and New York Yankees Football New York Jets and New York Giants There maybe others but I think you get the point. Can anyone answer this? Or is it because New York has enough money to control 2 franchises for each sport.
Its because of media market size....some cities can support more than one franchise....you have made some errors in your post though....for instance, the Nets are from New Jersey....they are actually called the New Jersey Nets....of the 6 teams you named, only 3 actually play in the state of NY(Knicks, Mets, and Yankees)....
What about hockey? The New York City area has 3 teams. The Devils, Islanders, and the Rangers. Not to mention the Sabres up in Buffalo, also. That's a lot of teams in one area.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (MysteryMan)</div><div class='quotemain'>Its probably the money and also hockey has NY 3 teams.</div> 3? Ney York Rangers, Ney York Islanders...Who else.
NFL- Buffalo (only NFL team that plays in NY) NY Jets (hopefully will play in NYC soon) NY Giants (play in NJ) MLB- NY Mets (play in NY) NY Yanks (play in NY i actually think they just got a new stadium deal ACROSS THE STREET, damn yankees NBA- NY Knicks (play in MSG) NJ Nets (in NJ but soon are getting a place to play in the city they are moving NHL- NY Isles (play on LI) NY Rangers (play in MSG) idk what you are talking about with the Devils they are a NJ team and dont have any plans in moving yea its all the media and the fan base its a great state to play in because the population is so big u can have as many fans as the other team across town. In other states for example Maryland the Orioles had a problem with the Nationals going to DC because of the fan base taken away despite the teams stadiums 50 miles away from each other. so its all about population and interest in the sport
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (J-E-T-S 1083)</div><div class='quotemain'>idk what you are talking about with the Devils they are a NJ team and dont have any plans in moving</div> But in my hockey book it points them to New York not New Jersey! i think it might be wrong..IM SEWING! lol *smacks myself* Ouch...
The city has 8,000,000 people in it...which means you only need 1 out of every 100 people in the city to buy a ticket to fill an 80,000 seat stadium. And, since a Nielsen television ratings point represents one million households, New York carries more television watching muscle than any other city. If every person in New York tuned in to a television show, it would be a Top 20 rated program for a given week, even if no one else in the country watched. It's all about money.
The Devils play in NJ but its considered to be within the New York City area. I figured everybody would understand that.
