Check What he said out. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said he has no plans to experiment with his rotation with the Rockets' playoff chances heading toward the long-shot category. "We're playing to win with no other consideration," Van Gundy said. "To mix in or 'develop' the young guys, I don't know. I'm going to play the guys that in my mind give us the best chance. But those guys have not changed." "The only one that hasn't gotten a shot is ( Maciej) Lampe. And yet, I think we're playing the guys that give us the best chance to win. The only decision I ever have is Chuck ( Hayes), Stromile ( Swift) or Deke ( Dikembe Mutombo), what two of three or what one of three (to play), but Chuck I think at times gets short-changed." Other than Lampe, Van Gundy said every player has had an opportunity to earn more playing time, though he said Hayes has actually played better when playing less. "When given consistent minutes, he hasn't performed as consistently as when given inconsistent minutes," Van Gundy said. "When given inconsistent minutes, he's been great."</div> Does Juwan Howard Ryan Bowen really gives us a better chance to win then Chuck Hayes, Stromile Swift, Dikembe Mutumbo or even Lampe for that matter?

I do think Hayes should be getting more time, but apparently JVG isn't impressed. I really think if Hayes got 20+ minutes night in and night out, it would only benefit us. It would have to come at the expense of Howard or Swift.

I think it's time we take Hayes for what he is and not expect the performances he had in his first two weeks consistently. He has shown his has the ability but it's seemed to me that he's been less eye-catching in the past month.
How does playing the old hustling guys give us a better chance to win? When Ryan Bowen steps on the court all that happens is missed field goals and when Juwan Howard plays it just reminds everyone of how much he has really regressed over the years. Personally I would really prefer Stromile Swift and Hayes and Mutumbo over those two. For the reason being they still have the potential to develop in a lost season when Juwan and Ryan maxed out. Also being sometimes Swift and Hayes does things that show progression. Though Swift and Hayes has regressed recently i think they still can gain it back Since JVG says he hasn't given Lampe a shot do you think he will ever give him a shot? He didn't today and we lost by like 20

I read that quote from JVG today morning and I just shook my head. He's grasping for excuses because he's being pressured to play Swift and keep his trade value up. Here's a chart plotting Hayes' statistical rating for each game this season, classified by month. Y-axis is his game score prorated to 40 minutes, and X-axis is minutes played in a particular game. I added 2nd order trend line for each month. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/durvasa/chuck_hayes.gif"> I Now, obviously this data isn't totally reliable since when minutes played are so low. But there's nothing here to suggest that Hayes has played better with sporadic, less minutes. He had just one poor game where he played 12 minutes. Other than that, all his games where he played 5 or more minutes were better (in terms of per-minute production) than his games where he played less than 5 minutes. Looking at February, it isn't clear that Hayes plays worse with more minutes either. His one game where he got more than 20 minutes was substandard, but his best game of the month was when he played 15 minutes. If you go all the way back to January, it's clear that he had many solid games when got 20+ minutes. If we take < 10 game score as a "bad" game, and > 15 game score as a "good" game, then when Chuck played less than five minutes, he's had 6 bad games and 2 good games. When Chuck has played more than 15 minutes, he's had 3 bad games and 4 good games.

I'm not sure, but I think they are playing Swift and Howard more because they want to resign Hayes in the off-season for a low amount. <u> If other teams see his potential and his great numbers, then they would throw generous offers at him...which he will indeed go for. </u> I guess JVG really wants to keep Chuck for next seasons playoff/champ run, but doesn't want to have to may his real worth in order to keep him. That is a good thing, because the first thing we need on this team is salary cap space (w/ T-Mac and Yao's contracts). Another plus would be to keep Howard (especially) and Swifts trade value up. I can only wish that they could find a way to get rid of Howard's contract. Keep Swift.
durvasa, I guess stats don't lie. However, when watching Rockets games, it does seem to my observation that Hayes isn't as effective when playing longer minutes, but if the stats prove otherwise, you must have some reason for your stand. And why does everyone want to keep Swift and trade Howard? Please, I don't want to hear "potential" again, because we're not going to see Stro live up to it.

In particular, Hayes's main contribution to the team is defense, and that isn't really captured by the game score rating very well. Maybe it's position defense, drawing charges, etc. that JVG is referring to. But in terms of per minute statistical production, Hayes seems to generally play better with more minutes.
I think teams have already seen Hayes potential and he wont be in houston next year. He will probably want to go where a big man is more needed, that imo
IMO the fact that JVG is so INconsistent with PT makes it hard for players to get a rythym, and some of the defensive assigments he puts out there...I don't even want to get into that.........
