"The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde season of Kyle Kendrick continued Wednesday.

This time, the Phillies got the good Kendrick, who shut down the Cardinals through seven scoreless innings in the Phillies' 4-0 win.

When Kendrick has been good this season, he's been very good. He has thrown 15 scoreless innings over two starts. But he has also been very bad, giving up at least four earned runs and never lasting past the fifth inning in his other four starts.

    So what's the difference?

"I think it's just results," Kendrick said. "Sometimes you make pitches, but you just don't get the results. I can't explain it."

The Phillies (16-11) will gladly take the good Kendrick, and hope they see even more.

Kendrick, who lowered his ERA from 7.61 to 5.87, had more than enough help from an offense that was efficient. Placido Polanco hit a two-run homer in the fourth, Shane Victorino added a solo shot in the sixth, and pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs doubled in a run in the seventh.

Kendrick did the rest. His sinker was effective as he got 10 groundouts through his seven innings. That included a double play from Brendan Ryan that ended the seventh after the Cardinals had runners on first and third.

"That right there is who he is," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said about Kendrick's sinker. "The sinker is his bread and butter."

But the news wasn't all good for the Phillies.

Juan Castro, filling in at shortstop for Jimmy Rollins, left the game in the bottom of the seventh when he strained his left hamstring. It was the same injury he suffered nearly two weeks ago in Arizona.

Castro missed two games the last time. He said this time he felt it cramp up as he touched first base while beating out an infield single. Wilson Valdez replaced him.

"It's a little sore and tight in the back of the knee," Castro said.

The Phillies got all the runs they would need in the fourth after Cardinals starter Brad Penny held them hitless through three innings.

Victorino led off with a single and Polanco followed with his homer. Victorino's homer in the sixth gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead."
