Kenny Florian, 36, recently announced his retirement from MMA due to a chronic issue with his back. The Westwood, Mass, native and Boston College grad had an eight-year career in MMA and is the only fighter in UFC history to compete in four different weight classes (185, 170, 155, and 145-lbs.)

Florian is perhaps the most prolific runner-up in UFC history. He reached the finals of the original The Ultimate Fighter reality series, losing to Diego Sanchez (at middleweight) by TKO in 2003. Florian dropped to welterweight then to lightweight and worked his way to a title shot against Sean Sherk in 2006, which he lost by unanimous decision. Florian won his next six fights to earn another title shot in 2009, this time against BJ Penn, which he lost by rear naked choke in the fourth round. Florian's final fight was a featherweight title bout against Jose Aldo Jr. in 2011, which he lost by unanimous decision. His failure to win a "big fight" prompted UFC President Dana White to classify Florian as a "choker".

Florian is now the colour commentator for the UFC on Fuel TV.

Other "greatest second-best" fighters include the likes of Jon Fitch and Josh Barnett.
