Kim and Trump Back at Square 1: If U.S. Keeps Sanctions, North Will Keep Nuclear Program

Nearly two years into his presidency and more than six months after his historic summit meeting with Kim Jong-un of North Korea, President Trump finds himself essentially back where he was at the beginning in achieving the ambitious goal of getting Mr. Kim to relinquish his nuclear arsenal.

That was the essential message of Mr. Kim’s annual New Year’s televised speech, where he reiterated that international sanctions must be lifted before North Korea will give up a single weapon, dismantle a single missile site or stop producing nuclear material.

The list of recent North Korean demands was a clear indicator of how the summit meeting in Singapore last June altered the optics of the relationship more than the reality. Those demands were very familiar from past confrontations: that all joint military training between the United States and South Korea be stopped, that American nuclear and military capability within easy reach of the North be withdrawn, and that a peace treaty ending the Korean War be completed.

“It’s fair to say that not much has changed, although we now have more clarity regarding North Korea’s bottom line,’’ Evans J.R. Revere, a veteran American diplomat and former president of the Korea Society, wrote in an email.

“Pyongyang refused to accept the United States’ definition of ‘denuclearization’ in Singapore,’’ he wrote. To the United States, that means the North gives up its entire nuclear arsenal; in the North’s view, it includes a reciprocal pullback of any American ability to threaten it with nuclear weapons. “The two competing visions of denuclearization have not changed since then.”

    Such tripe.

Clinton and Bush and Obama cowardly allowed NK to develop and test nukes without reproach, kicking America's security down the road toward a certain nuclear war, which may be inevitable because of their inaction.

By meeting with Kim and publicly demanding NK give up nukes in exchange for economic improvement Trump exposed NK's danger to all the people in the world, and by amping up sanctions has Kim desperately begging again for another meeting as his citizens starve in fear and contemplate an overthrow.

Trump's announcement that he was bringing troops home from victory in Syria seems to have been the trigger this time, as it's clear that our many enemies in Asia will no longer be ignored by the US.

Wait what? You mean sending dummy to meet the big Korean for a few hours didn’t end the nuclearization of NK? How is that possible? Trumpets said we were all good with Kim.

Games have rules, real life does not.

This is why libs always fail at resolving conflicts with other countries.

Many cultures see nothing wrong with lying and backstabbing, considering it merely tough negotiating tactics. The means to the end does not matter to them, nor do they feel anything but pride for having been dishonest to achieve that end.

This is why diplomacy never solved any conflict, and why military might coupled with determination and perseverance almost always wins in the end.

your stereotypes are hilarious Maris....your fake lib enemy is straight out of Marvel Comics ...I'm not your enemy...I'm sure somebody will role play with you though...current foreign affairs policies of your guy have us making enemies of our bordering countries and former allies...it's a global grab bag now for military expansion from Russia, China, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and on and on....and Russia is now investing in Honduras and China in Mexico...any strategist with half a brain can see how Trump is painting us into a corner....under Trump we very well may see Russian Navy in Central America and the Chinese Navy there and in Mexico....stupid, stupid foreign policy move...the Chinese now basically have the Panama Canal since we've left it to Panama
