KINGS AND GREG OSTERTAG AGREE TO A CONTRACT July 20, 2004 SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento Kings and veteran center Greg Ostertag today agreed to a contract in principal, according to Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Ostertag is expected to be in Sacramento tomorrow (July 21st) to sign the contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. ?We?re really excited to add a veteran center with valuable playoff experience to our roster,? said Petrie. ?By adding Greg, it gives us a chance to improve in some areas where we?ve been struggling over the past couple of years. This gives us another rebounder and an interior presence at the basket. I think he?ll fit in well with Brad and Chris on our frontline.? Ostertag, who is entering his 10th season in the NBA, has played for the Utah Jazz throughout his nine-year career. He has amassed career averages 5.1 points (.487 FG%, .125 3FG%, .577 FT%), 5.9 rebounds and 1.85 blocks per game in 640 outings. His most productive season, statistically, occurred during the 1996-97 campaign when he averaged 7.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.10 blocks per game over 77 contests. Ostertag led the Jazz in blocked shots (2.73 bpg, 5th in NBA) in 1998-99 and ranked 2nd on the team in rebounds (7.3 rpg). He was Utah?s leading shot-blocker (2.10 bpg, 11th in NBA) for a third consecutive season in 1997-98. Ostertag scored a career-high 25 points (4/28/01) versus the Phoenix Suns and scored a playoff career-high of 22 points against the Kings (4/26) in the first round of the 2003 NBA Playoffs. ?I?m excited about joining the Kings,? explained Ostertag. ?I hope everyone knows that I?m not going to replace Vlade with scoring and passing, but I will be rebounding, blocking shots and taking up space in the middle. Hopefully, I?ll be able to help these guys reach their ultimate goal of winning a championship. They?re a good team. They still have their core with Chris (Webber), Peja (Stojakovic), Brad (Miller), Mike Bibby and Bobby (Jackson). I?m not coming in looking to be the star. I?m just coming in looking to do my part.? Prior to being selected by the Jazz in the first round (28th overall) of the 1995 NBA Draft, Ostertag enjoyed a four-year career at the University of Kansas. He finished his Jayhawk career as the top shot-blocker in both Kansas and Big Eight Conference history, compiling 258 blocks (2.03 bpg). http://www.nba.com/kings/news/Kings_Sign_O...-114367-58.html
Osertag Is a Very Good Addition to the Kings Team.He has more Depth than Divac, and Is a well respected Veteran,so He will definetly help out with Miller, and the other Younger Players. Good Move for Petrie & The Maloofs
Decent pickup for cheap, but reality is, they need to deepen the bench. The lack of depth on the bench, accompanied by Peja's cold streak during the playoffs, is the biggest problem for this team.
wow.... that came out of left field. well...... should make a good backup. avaraged the roughly the same amount of minutes that Divac did last year. FG% was 47.6% not really great FT numbers tho last season 57.9% (but then he has never been a great FT shooter. he has never been above 70% for a single season). AVG'd 7.4 RPG and 1.7 BPG. but only put out 6.8 PPG last year I am thinking that having played with Malone and Stockton for a few years, he should be able to fit into a passing offensive scheme fairly easily. (but honestly, its been a while since I have actually watched him play for any longer than one or two minutes in a game so im not sure how good he is with passing the ball & finding the open cutter under the basket.) we shall find out very soon tho!
He's not really the guy that puts a smile on your face when you see him on your team. However, he'll be able to provide a presence in the paint, which is what the Kings need.
^^ thats what I tell everyone about Divac. Yes, Im not too proud to have mr. "flop" himself on our Laker roster, but he will provide the presence that we need on the floor.
i'm sure he will be a body in the paint, but i think there is a significant loss in leadership by exchanging divac for ostertag. not to mention the passing capabilities!
Wow, management pluged up that hole fast, overall I think this is a great addition(although I wanna know the price) for the kings.
Not too crazy about this deal, but hey, it's something. Like it's been said before, he'll be a body in the paint.
Its not a big deal,he isnt really nuthing to brag about he wil give them an inside pressance and some rebounds thats all I see him doing for the Kings, but the Kings better hope B.Miller or C Webb doesnt get hurt because if that happens this player will be staring for you guys.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Rudeezy:</div><div class="quote_post">Why didn't the Lakers go after him?</div> They want Vlade instead. Ostertag really isn't a bad pickup for the Kings, I don't see why anyone would complain. He's a big body to put in the paint, which is always essential in the west. I like the deal.
Not a bad pick up for the Kings. They certainly won't get what they got from Vlade, but this isn't a bad replacement simply because Ostertag won't need a lot of minutes, as he will likely sub in for Brad Miller. The Kings didn't need a dominant center because Rick Adelman has them running a creative offense involving the whole team, hence the reason everyone on the starting lineup averages a good number of assists. Greg is nothing but a mediocre role player, and the Kings did a fair job filling in for Vlade.
i just hope that all those assists that rubbed off on miller from vlade last season are still around next season.
Miller should start at center and Ostertag would be a good backup. The Kings are not really suffering from the loss of Divac.
