‘Mature and settled’ Klose proves his worth
After just a few weeks as a Munich player, Miroslav Klose has underscored his goalscoring qualities with a total of five goals in five competitive matches. Repeating his feat from last weekend’s 1-1 draw in Hamburg, he hit the target in Saturday’s meeting with Schalke to rescue his side from suffering a first defeat of term. In the time between the two outings with Bayern, Klose scored both Germany’s goals in a comfortable 2-0 victory in Wales “As everyone can see, I’m feeling very good in Munich and with the national team,” confirmed Klose, who suffered a long and frustrating goalscoring drought in the months preceding his summer switch from Werder Bremen. Klose maturing nicely “He’s settled in at once,” offered Ottmar Hitzfeld on Sunday. A goal against Sao Paulo on the club’s pre-season tour to Hong Kong had freed the player mentally, the coach reckoned. He netted the goal to beat Schalke in the League Cup final, equalised in the Cup first round tie against Burghausen, and then fired a brace in the Bundesliga opener at home to Rostock. Hitzfeld is pleased with his summer acquisition, and not merely because he hits the target. “He’s a player who opens his mouth in the dressing room before the match and at half-time,” Hitzfeld reported, “he’s matured into a big personality.“ Self-critical after Schalke A mark of the player’s character is his ability for self-criticism, as he accepted Hitzfeld’s complaint that Klose and his fellow strikers lacked ruthlessness and even selfishness in the opposition penalty area. “I had a couple of openings in the first half which I should have finished off by myself. I was very careless in that respect,” Klose admitted. It will be interesting to see how the World Cup top scorer reacts to that realisation in future matches. It would certainly come as no surprise if he extends his personal tally in the UEFA Cup against Belenenses on Thursday. “He’s come to Bayern at exactly the right time,“ Hitzfeld concluded.
