Man... thats like all-star money, and he's far from it.

If it really is that much I have to ask why Mullin extended it.

Someone PLEASE explain why my logic is wrong.
They want to extend the contract now because they think they can get him for cheaper than what he'll be when he's a restricted free agent. But at 45 mils, why even extend it? At the end of the year he'll either be 45mil OR less. No team will sign him for more than 45 mil, I mean c'mon, it's Dunleavy. At the end of the season we can sign him for what the market commands which is 45 mil or less. SO WHY ARE THEY EXTENDING HIS CONTRACT.

45 mils isnt that bad. I think that starts at around 7 mils? Hopefully he will get some more 30 pt games like he did in the preseason and if he keeps improving the contract doesnt seem too bad.

hahah those are some funny wallpapers underneath the story. I love how they're trying to compare Dunleavy to Rick Barry. Must have been conceptualized by an Oaksterdam resident. Never seen Rick Barry play personally but sure seems a tad insulting for him.

How in the world 45 mils isn't bad? If it starts at 7 mils, it only means that the deal will end with 11 mils per year. We are paying 9 mils per year to a player who has limited upside, can't create his own shot and can't defend to save his life.

This deal is bad for so many levels

1st, we do not have a room to throw money around like this unless Cohan said he will be better owner than Cuban. Now we have absolutely no room to do anything including signing our own rookies for next 5 years unless we dump some salaries.

2nd, we absolutely do not have to throw the deal right now. Next year, Dunleavy becomes restricted FA, and we can match any deal other teams give to him. Because of his restricted status, Mullin is in higher ground to make a deal. I mean, just look at what Bulls did to Curry and Chandler.

3rd, his current value is 6 mils per year, and nobody will throw 9 mil or more per year to Dunleavy next year unless he turns into Bird ver. 2. To make things better, other teams can only offer 4 years per year.

4th, we will have one more year to observe Dunleavy or Pietrus. Heck, even without Pietrus, we still could observe Dunleavy and see how he will fit in or at least make him work hard in contract year.

Not only we will most likely sign a similar or even better deal by waiting a year, there are many advantage by waiting a year and basically zero disadvantage by signing right now. But that didn't stop Mullin from overpaying glue guy to 9 mils per year. Somebody please slap Mullin around...

Yeah, even before discussing whether Dunleavy is grossly overpaid or just overpaid, there is no real reason to give Dunleavy a contract right now. Nobody will offer 9 mils per year and the chance to sign Dunleavy is basically same this year or next year. And at very least, we will get one more year to observe both Dunleavy and Pietrus. If Pietrus turns out to be next MJ, we will have to dump salaries to make a room for Pietrus. Knowing we need a breathing room, don't you think other GM will try to grab as much as possible from us? And, since we are absolutely strapped for next 5 years, we will have same problem whether it's Pietrus, Biedrins, Diogu, Zarko, Monta or any other rookies that we are trying to resign. If you think my financial forecast was gloomy and negative before...

Davis: 15.5 mils for 4 years
Richardson: 12 mils for 6 years
Murphy: 10 mils for 6 years
Dunleavy: 8.8 mils for 5 years
Fisher: 6 mils for 5 years
Foyle: 8 mils for 4 years.

    60.3 mils per year.
This year's luxury tax line: 62 mils.

The only reason our financial situation doesn't look serious right now is because Mullin started from ground zero. But, in terms of managing the money, I can't say he is doing better than Twerdzik...

Hehe, I think I said very similar things when we resigned Richardson and Murphy. Heck, if I can find what I wrote a year ago, it will be really really similar. Deadline has been very tough for me...

I'm not saying its a good contract, I'm just saying its not an absolutely horrible contract. Overpaid? Yes I'd say so but most young players are overpaid, Dunleavy has improved every year hes been in the league and dramatically improved since Baron's arrival. That coupled with his added muscle should improve his offense, defense, rebounding, etc. I totally agree that we should have waited until the end of this year but we all knew Mullin has a love affair with Dun and he is horrible at dealing with agents. If he ends up averaging 17/6/5 with his defense improved to at least average then the contract wont look as bad. If he doesnt improve at all from the end of last season, hes fairly overpaid and Mulin screwed up. Its a big risk but what if Dunleavy blows up this year and next offseason hes worth 55 million or more? Even if he doesnt blow up Mullin wouldnt have traded him or let him walk and we get the same result as we do now.

I would have liked to have waited just to see if Pietrus could have taken his job but chances of that are unlikely. We probably would have ended up signing him for a similar deal. Now there is nothing we can do about it except complain about Mullin.

Well the news isn't shocking, but it's certainly disappointing that the GM looks more and more like a guy that just got lucky with one huge deal. I'm sure the Spurs or the Pistons would never let spending get this out of control... Dunleavy... echhh... There are very specific things I like about his game and character and a lot of things I don't like about the way he plays and the results he shows. We'll just have to see if he really is a late bloomer as he describes. I just don't think he's a good enough scoring threat to support the rest of his game and it also has to do with his confidence level, the fact our team is very perimeter oriented and his physical ability and shot touch aren't all that. He needs to be a scorer or else he'll have no way to draw defenders like the way Jrich or Baron do. It's about production and ability to change the game in a very pronounced way and he's got the ability to make others better, but no real way to draw attention on offense despite his terrific ballhandling for his size, good decisions with or without the ball and above average shot touch. But let's not get into this, it's more about his consistency as a starting small forward and if he's never consistent enough to deserve the starting job, we just wasted a WHOLE lot of money.

I mean we can still lose all of our points gained when the matchups favor the other team and they start exploiting us. There might be times where we need Dunleavy's shot touch to stretch defenses but it's not falling... There might be times where he simply can't make anyone else better on his own... There was a reason why Dunleavy saw little 4th quarter minutes sometimes and why Pietrus saw little 4th quarter minutes sometimes... there just isn't a perfect solution at small forward based on this team. a 14 ppg inconsistent small forward that can't defend or rack up assists on the level of Grant Hill or Toni Kukoc is not something we need at that price. But then again it's not my money, so Mullin better have faith in our owner's ability to support his bball decisions financially without losing talent or possible impact players more worthy of locking up. If guys we might lose in the future like Biedrins, Diogu, or somebody else, blows up I'll be pissed if Dunleavy isn't playing his contract's worth. Also, I'll be pissed if Baron can't perform the way he wants to due to injury and we don't have a way to keep other talented guys on the wing like Montay Ellis. It's taken us so damn long to find a worthy playmaker that can change the team on Baron's level that we need to have flexibility in case sht goes down.

I just hope Dunleavy steps up like Jrich did last year and plays well at least every other night like he was doing in the last few months. Before, Dunleavy would play like one good game and disappears for the next 7 games it seemed. In April of last season he was stroking it, dishing out assists, and actually not letting the other guy he was guarding get easy shots. He kept turnovers low and put up some respectable stats in limited amount of shots. In April, he must have averaged some marvel of a three-point fg%. I think it was 50% from beyond the arc on average of 4 and half shot attempts per game from that distance.

While I don't agree with it personally, there is a lot of logic to what Mullin did. Simply put, Dunleavy got the market rate for a player of his age, productivity, and potential.

    A) Dunleavy is at best the 5th best player to come out of the '02 draft class, and at worst the 8th best. Yao and Amare signed max deals, Boozer signed a 6 year/$68 mil deal, Prince signed a 5 year/$47 mil deal. Butler and Nene, the other players from '02 that are Dunleavy's caliber, have yet to sign extensions (I believe).

[IMG] Other players of Dunleavy's caliber that have signed contracts recently have also helped set the price on Dunleavy. Along with Prince, Bobby Simmons also signed a 5 year/$47 mil deal.

    C) Murphy, Richardson, and Foyle signed comparable deals last year given their respective levels of production. There's no way Mullin could have gotten away with lowballing Dunleavy.

Again, I'm not happy about Dunleavy getting that much, but it's really the market rate for him. The Warriors are certainly going to have salary cap/luxury tax problems the next couple of years and will probably have to let Pietrus and Zarko walk. And if Biedrins develops, they'll probably have to package a first rounder with Foyle to have room.

I know everyone here hoped the Warriors could keep all their guys together, and that if someone had to go, many would have prefered it be Dunleavy, but I don't think it was possible in today's market.

The good news is this: Mullin isn't really spending out of control. At least, not any more out of control than the rest of the GM's (btw, I always feel funny calling him the GM even though he isn't, but he's really the decision maker). That means the salary cap is going to keep going up and the luxury tax line is going to keep getting pushed back as well.

Just look at the '03 draft class: Lebron, Carmelo, Wade, Bosh will all get max deals. Hinrich, Ridnour, Kaman, and Josh Howard will all get at least as much as Dunleavy. Next year Dunleavy's deal is not going to look bad at all.

Mullin has always had an infatuation with Dunleavy...I definitely think 45 mill is overboard...Dunleavy is a capable ROLE player with a stable all-around game but this contract is just ridiculous...
