The New York Knicks have decided not to match the Spurs? three-year, $7 million offer to restricted free agent Jackie Butler, a Knicks? spokesman said Wednesday. The Spurs have yet to officially hear from the Knicks or the NBA. The Spurs also have not heard from the Denver Nuggets, who have until Thursday to match an offer for restricted free agent Francisco Elson. Both Butler and Elson are centers.</div>http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/basketb...06.203c608.html

Good pickup by Spurs, he's not a guy I expect to make a immediate impact but will down the line. He's only 21 and he's shown good potential. Playing next to Tim Duncan should also help. Any word on Elson yet?

Ouch. This makes the spurs legit again for a championship and I don't know if the mavs can play any better than last years playoffs against the spurs.

I really hope the Nuggets don't match Elson's offer. It would make for a great battle in training camp for the starting spot. Either one of these guys could start, so the competition would be great. Butler is gonna be nice, he has decent post game and hopefully has continued to get in better shape.

well i read that with the trade for smith it makes it more likely they will match elson, which i don't really mind, i mean, have you seen his playoff stats??? might as well just throw beno at center, might get more production lol

I don't think teams should be afraid of Spurs adding Jackie Butler. Kid has potential but I don't expect anything larger then what Rasho/Nazr brought this upcoming year.

Let's just wait and see. I think with consistent time Elson would be a solid backup. He needs to know what's gonna be expected of him each night, I think that will help his confidence. If they do match, I hope they go after Wright or Ely.

I wouldn't be surprised if he surpasses Rasho/Nazr's production in the first year. The spurs now have life. Isaiah is a dumbass.

Isaiah is a dumbass.</div> No sh*t, anyone Spurs get would be good enough to start for the Spurs at center since they had no one. I'm willing to make a bet with you that Butler does not surpass Rasho and Nazr's numbers combined. Rasho avg 4.5 ppg,3.9 reb, 1.3 bl : Nazr avg 5.2 ppg, 6.2 reb, .61 bl. So Jackie Butler has to put up over 9.7 ppg, 10.1 reb, and 2 blocks. Basically avg a double double and over 2 blocks a game to surpass what Rasho/Nazr brought last year. And Isiah is not a dumbass for not matching. He would have been a dumbass to match, that's why Knicks fans were happy he didn't. He was off and on last year in minutes and they still have to pan out their potential center in Eddy Curry. Jackie Butler wasn't a need, what's the point of adding more contracts?

Re: Knicks decline to match Spurs' offer to Butler

Are you kidding? Knicks fans are pissed. I guess Butler is not twice the player as either Rasho or Nazr but he will average the same and possibly slightly more. I've heard some knicks fans freak out about this. I feel sorry for them that they gave up their only future center and overpay for Jerome James.

Re: Knicks decline to match Spurs' offer to Butler

No I'm not, I read Knicks fans responses. As the week went by, it was apparent Butler would be a Spur and Elson was the questionable one. Know your facts. The logical Knicks fans knew it.Couple quotes from Knicks fans not pissed off.
There are other fans that are mad, but it's about half either way. If you honestly think Butler will average that or more, your high. Your vastly overrating a unknown player. Also, Knicks future center is Eddy Curry. Not Butler.

He wont average more than Rasho and Nazr combined but he wont play as much as both of them combined either. Horry will get more minutes, and so will javkotas if we bring him over. Also, Oberto isnt as bad as everybody thinks he is. When he played in the playoffs, he grabbed his fair share of rebounds. He isnt good, but good enough to play at the center position for the spurs now

rok, the knick fans are about 60/40 on this, i've went on a few knicks boards to get some info and a shitload of ppl are pissed that he didn't get matched, and a lot or happy for butler that he gets to have a chance to grow...........and of course butler won't get those numbers this year, pop is a retard and will sit him when he can be used and put in worthless orberto or if we get elson because they are foriegners

First of all, Coach pop is not a retard, second, Javtokas is not coming over anymore, and third I think Butler will become a pretty good center for the spurs, he will learn alot from timmy so i like this move by the spurs.

lmao, 20 and 10??? wtf are you smoking?? eddy is good but he doesn't have enough heart or passion for the game to get 10 rebounds a game, he is a bum in my book for being a starter and a big dude and can't even get more then 5 rebounds a game.
