<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> "Instead, (Allan) Houston stays and today's amnesty deadline will pass with the Knicks perhaps only making an accounting move in waiving Shandon Anderson's bought-out contract that saves about $18 million in luxury tax." New York Post "Meanwhile, the Knicks are pursuing amnesty casualties, Brian Grant and Aaron McKie, who played for Larry Brown in Philly. The Knicks would also have interest in Dallas' Michael Finley, if he's waived as expected today." New York Post "The other two options they are considering today is waiving Maurice Taylor ($19.8M savings) or Jerome Williams ($12.5M). But though they are logjammed at power forward, Taylor's and Williams' contracts are assets next summer in their expiring year. Malik Rose is no longer a consideration." New York Post "The decision to keep Houston may not be all about dignity. They could save more money, too. Houston has recently acknowledged to Knick brass he's not willing to go through what he did the past two years in missing 90 games and would consider retirement if not healthy after training camp. That would save the Knicks not only the $39.8M luxury tax but 75 percent of his contract because insurance pays it off." New York Post "The Knicks are expected to use today's "amnesty provision" not to get rid of their 34-year-old shooting guard, but to release Jerome Williams instead. Malik Rose and Malik Taylor were candidates to be released. The one-time only provision in the new collective bargaining agreement allows teams that are over the salary cap to cut one player and not have to pay the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax on the contract." New York Daily News "According to several sources, Dolan, who has a close relationship with (Allan) Houston, informed the veteran two weeks ago that he wanted him to continue his career in New York." New York Daily News "A person close to Houston says the shooting guard has mixed feelings over being spared by Dolan. Houston knows that Thomas, the Knicks' president, believes his best days have long since passed. Last year, Thomas told reporters that Houston should consider retirement." New York Daily News "From both a basketball and economic standpoint, it makes sense for Houston and the Knicks to mutually sever ties." New York Daily News "But in a curious twist, the rule will not claim its namesake as a victim. Instead, the Knicks will waive a spare power forward, either Jerome Williams or Malik Rose, sometime today, said a basketball official who was briefed on the decision. The person required anonymity to avoid jeopardizing relations with team officials." New York Times "The Knicks will announce today which player they are releasing under the new amnesty plan, and two people familiar with the process said the team is leaning toward unloading 6-9 power forward Jerome Williams and not Allan Houston." The article goes on to say: "...and with this revelation, Isiah Thomas has been labeled 'Clinically Retarded'"
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting lessthanjake:</div><div class="quote_post">The article goes on to say: "...and with this revelation, Isiah Thomas has been labeled 'Clinically Retarded'" </div> lmao, agreed. Why not dump Houston
I maybe would understand why Thomas would keep Houston, but why waive JYD? He's a great rebounder and team defender, and now the Knicks will have trouble rebounding once again. I'd easily waive Malik Rose over JYD. I hope the Nets now are considering in acquiring him.
^ they say they'll keep allan because he might retire. i think its a ploy. he's not gonna retire with 20 million dollars left on the table. no way. Houston is playing Thomas like a fiddle.
Actually Houston is playing the owner, Dolan like a fiddle. They are close friends, so it's likely Allan Houston will actually retire. The Knicks have officially waived JYD. I'm not sure why they waived him over Malik Rose, who would have saved them $19M instead of $12M in luxury tax. They do the same things on the court and JYD is actually 2 inches taller. If they weren't going to waive Houston, they should have waived Shandon Anderson's remaining contract. His contract would have saved more money in luxury tax as well. Now the question becomes, who takes JYD's roster spot?
Maurice Taylor: He?s great offensively. He has some nice post moves, a pretty good midrange jumper, and creates instant offense off the bench. The only problem is ? that?s all he does. He doesn?t rebound, doesn?t defend, and he is unable to play any other position but power forward and we have plenty of those already. He is making about 19 million until next season when is contract expires. Malik Rose: I love his game. He plays good defense, plays with energy and heart, and is a class act. Although undersized, he is able to use his wide variety of skills to his advantage. He?s also versatile enough to play power forward and small forward. In addition, he brings championship experience to the Knicks which is very valuable to any team. He can shoot well from midrange has a little post up skills and can replace Kurt Thomas. He?ll be a great player for Larry Brown. Shandon Anderson: Well with this move, the Knicks lose no one and they get rid of Anderson?s contract once and for all, but the Knicks needed to let go of a player in order for them to be complete because 16 players were on contract. Allan Houston: If he retires, the Knicks will kill two birds with one stone and if he doesn?t, it means he?s fully healthy. If he?s fully healthy, the Knicks have an elite shooter and closer to finally help them in clutch situations. His contract also ends in two years along with Taylor?s and we can make a run at the rookie class of 03. Jerome Williams: I loved the guy as much as anyone, but unfortunately he?s the odd man out. Williams is a great defender and role player and has a great deal of character, but he is quite expensive for his services and the Knicks really needed to get rid of a power forward. Now the glut stands at 4 with two of them being able to play another position.
Why not release JYD? The Knicks have a logjam at powerforward so it would make sense to get rid of one of them. Sweetney is our best low post player as well as being a great rebounder, Taylor can be a low post prescence off the bench and Rose is a good defender and rebounder. Out of all the powerforwards we have he's the most expendable. Waiving Houston would have not given the Knicks any sort of competitive advantage whatsoever. All it would have done was save Dolan some cash that he doesnt mind spending. Out of all the players the Knicks have waiving JYD made the most sense. Anyway I think Isiah Thomas should be fired.
I'm also hearing that JYD was about to retire? That makes the move even better for us and doesn't make Isiah look "clinically retarded".
I think its ironic that the new amnesty rule that has been dubbed "the Allan Houston rule" wasn't even used on him. I agree though, that one of the Knick's forwards had to be waived. However, like shape pointed out, waiving Malik Rose would have saved more money and got rid of one of the numerous undersized PF's.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting MrJ:</div><div class="quote_post">I'm also hearing that JYD was about to retire? That makes the move even better for us and doesn't make Isiah look "clinically retarded".</div> Actually if that were the case it would make him more retarded. If I understand the way it works, if Williams retired the money he was owed would have to paid and would still count against the cap but not agaisnt the luxury tax. One of the reasons they didnt choose to wave Houston.
Malik Rose is too valuable to us to waive him. He might not put up superstar numbers, but he brings us championship experience and is our best defender with or without JYD around. Just like Kurt Thomas, he can hit the midrange jumper, but has more range and is more versatile being able to play some small forward. He's also a great locker room leader for the team. Cutting him would have been a mistake on the Knicks part.
So you have used the amnesty on Shandon Anderson's contract, and if JYD wanted to retire he would have anyway.
