Just found this article on the web and wanted to share found it very interesting.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The time together apparently paid off for both Bryant and Cox, who knew from a young age his star cousin of the Los Angeles Lakers had special talent.

Cox has done well for himself, too.

He has emerged as the top scorer in the talent-laden West Coast Conference this season after following in his father?s footsteps and choosing the University of San Francisco. Chubby Cox played for the Dons in the late 1970s when the team went 29-2 and was ranked No. 1 with Bill Cartwright at center.

John Cox, a sixth-year senior, hopes he?s helped the program get back on track so it soon can realize such success again.

?When my father was here in the ?70s, the program was such a big program ? kind of like how Duke and North Carolina are,? he said. ?It?s good to try to build it back up to where it was. I?d like this to be a little baby step to get it back. The old tradition and the way it used to be was such a good time, because they were winning. I just try to imagine it.?

The Dons have been inconsistent this season under first-year coach Jessie Evans, but have showed plenty of signs they could be a contender in next month?s WCC tournament. Gonzaga and Saint Mary?s are the favorites to win the league tournament and the NCAA berth that comes with the championship.

Cox began the week averaging 20.9 points and 4.2 rebounds, but was held to nine points in USF?s fourth straight loss, 69-61 at San Diego on Wednesday ? marking the first time this season he?s been held to single digits.

The 6-foot-5 guard missed all but one game last year with a severely sprained left knee. The injury happened when an opposing player crashed into him in the waning moments while going for a loose ball.

Cox received a medical hardship season from the NCAA, allowing him to return for another year. He also missed his true sophomore season following surgery to remove bone spurs from his foot.

He?s been impressive in his comeback season.

?He has a high basketball IQ,? Bryant said. ?He?s overcome a lot of injuries to get to where he is. I call him to see how he?s doing.?

When asked about the remote chance of Cox one day being his teammate, Bryant said, ?That would be pretty cool.?

Bryant has said in the past that Cox is one of the people he?s closest to ? they learned the game together from Chubby and Bryant?s father, Joe.

Chubby and Bryant?s mom, Pamela, are siblings.

?He was just so ahead of his time, a rare talent,? Cox said of Kobe. ?I picked up a lot from him. The same way I picked things up from my dad and my uncle. It?s just good genes. It?s cool. ... Whenever I need to know something, I call him.?</div>
