L.t. To take the “crumbs”?

Less than a week after the mother of Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson characterized the team’s offer to her son on a restructured contract as “crumbs,” L.T. apparently is warming up to the notion of eating whatever he can get.

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, ongoing talks are in the “final stages.”

And Acee predicts, after recently predicting (sort of) that L.T. would leave, that Tomlinson will continue his career with the Chargers.

Her’s our semi-educated guess. We think that agent Tom Condon shopped the final offer to other potentially-interested teams. Permissible for Condon to ask but impermissible for the teams to answer, it’s a common (and prudent) practice whenever a player face an ultimatum from his current team.

In this case, it’s likely that Condon realized that the Chargers are willing to pay Tomlinson more than anyone else.

Thus, the question becomes whether Tomlinson is willing to take less than he was supposed to get, even if it’s more than someone else is willing to give.

On the surface, it should be an easy analysis. But ego gets tied up in the equation, with the player not realizing why his past performance doesn’t entitle him to his future pay.

And the player doesn’t always make the right decision. Though it’s not known how much less than $9 million the Colts were willing to pay to receiver Marvin Harrison, we suspect that the Colts were ready to give him more than anyone else was inclined to pay for an aging wideout with bad knees. Otherwise, Harrison would already have a new home.

For now, it looks as if L.T. won’t be looking. We think that he already has looked, and that he’s realizing (once he ignores the $6.725 million base salary he’s supposed to make) that the Chargers might be the best option.
