La Russa headed to Mayo Clinic

    Manager Tony La Russa will use today's Cardinals off day to visit the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz.

    Originally, he had slated himself for a trip there to take his annual physical exam for insurance purposes relative to his position as chairman of Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation. But after the Cards' 3-1 victory Sunday over Milwaukee, La Russa told the Post-Dispatch he also will have the viral infection around his right eye examined. La Russa has been plagued for nearly a month by the ailment, which has caused considerable swelling and discoloration and virtually had closed the eye at one point.

    Before the game La Russa was asked how he felt and responded, "Miserable."

    Then at his customary postgame televised news conference, La Russa was perspiring and kept dabbing at his right eye, which he said had been watering through the game.
