the lakers are NOT a monopoly like you say.

the big thing is they are giving shaq like $23 million this season, and kobe $12 million. the salary cap is somehwere in the ballpark of $60 million (please correct me if i'm wrong). the rest of the players 3-15 have to share the other half of the cap.

the lakers are already over the cap, but only because they are giving so much money to shaq and kobe...and rightfully so because they deserve every penny of it.

i doubt the lakers can afford gary payton. but juwan howard, who will be coming off a $100 million contract, might be willing to join the lakers for cheap.

Quote:

23,571,000 - Shaquille O'Neal
12,375,000 - Kobe Bryant
5,300,000 - Robert Horry
4,445,000 - Devean George
4,170,000 - Rick Fox
3,740,000 - Tracy Murray
3,000,000 - Derek Fisher
1,540,000 - Samaki Walker

1,019,554 - Kareem Rush

Jerry West & Mitch Kupchak are good at finding the loop holes and convincing aging veterans to join the Laker dynasty for cheap for a chance to win a ring.

The Lakers are also great at rewarding their players after basketball is done and being in LA gives these players a lot of opportunity to make money outside of basketball, through endorsements and ads.

Once you play for a big city team you become an instant celebrity and are taken care of wherever you go. For example, free dinners, free cars, free models, etc.

The Lakers also have a Mid Level Exception to sign a veteran player for i think 4.5M and not have it count against their cap. They will probably use that space to sign Pippen next season.

i think the salary cap is about 44 or 43 million this year, not 60, and i think the lakers could add someone but they dont like to do it because it takes a while to learn the triangle, and plus everytime they get a decent free agent, mitch richmond, isiah rider, whoever else, they usually dont play and then dont come back next year.

A couple of points to be made.

1: Jerry West is no longer with the Lakers.
2: Everyone has the $4.5M MLE to use on players, so they have no advantage there. That said, they have an advantage because they are the Lakers, and players want to go there.

go get some facts before you start throwing this garbage out in the open like this...it just makes people (myself included) think that you are rather incompetent...

the Lakers are NOT the highest paid team in the NBA...don't confuse dominance with high salary plz...two superstars DO NOT make a payroll huge...especially with Kobe being quite the steal at i believe 25 million over the next 2 years in his contract structure...

these are 01/02 figures...but this should disprove ur point (as this was the THIRD championship season for the lakers)

New York $85,253,575
Portland $83,996,421
Philadelphia $57,791,546
Dallas $56,506,659
Milwaukee $55,568,802
Sacramento $54,763,038
Phoenix $54,696,916
Minnesota $54,509,632
Utah $54,334,915
Denver $53,687,498
New Jersey $53,597,326
Indiana $53,211,121
L.A. Lakers $52,985,249
Miami $52,916,216
Toronto $52,657,135

Boston $47,469,112
Golden State $47,173,177
San Antonio $46,487,983
Cleveland $45,924,974
Seattle $44,965,883
Chicago $42,544,557
Detroit $41,711,427
L.A. Clippers $33,734,932

Where do you get all this salary cap info man? I've looked for it forever, never could find it.

Anyway, that is a good point, but try and stay a little off the insults, you can make him disproven without trying to humiliate him.

a lot of people told me to stop trying to humiliate the guy because they are only interested in 'intelligent basketball conversation here'...you cant have intelligent basketball conversation when someone makes comments that they cant back up with fact in any way shape or form (such as the person i have been "attacking" throughout these threads)...

the reason i make fun of him...yes i am trying to embarass the guy and make him look like an idiot...that way maybe he will think or do his hw on topics before he goes off and writes any more random garbage that the rest of us will have to read -.- so once he stops making dumb comments the insults will stop flowing his way from me...i have no problem with ppl who have different opinions from my own...life would be damn boring if everyone agreed about everything...but i am only interested in debating subjects with people who are going to take the time to make clear logical arguments that (and here is the key for you oldskoofunktitude) CAN BE REASONED AND BACKED UP THROUGH FACTUAL INFORMATION...

thank you...if you note i havent insulted any other person on this board (at least not nearly to the extent) because a lot of wut i've seen written here was pretty interesting etc. so this proves my point (you must excuse the kobe thread though...i am the biggest kobe bryant fan on the face of the planet so when someone tries to put him down i just go off =P)

oh and to answer your question: the salary cap info that i quoted can be found on usatoday.com...for 01/02 here:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/nba/stories...02-salaries.htm

i wasnt able to find any stats for 02/03 yet so if someone finds them and can post them that'd be cool...i dont think the order has changed too much though

Ok, SCBrian, I appreciate that you like the poster to have looked up their information so that they can back it up. It is frustrating when they pull random crap on the board. But instead of attacking them (which you were), the best way to embarass them is by, simply, proving them wrong. I have alot of expirience with basketball forums, and trust me, it does not help to inflame the situation, proving them wrong is the best you can do.
