<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">If Marbury thrives under Brown, like so many guards before him, then the Knicks could be a legitimate playoff contender. If Brown and Marbury clash like they did at last summer's Olympics, then Marbury's days in New York may be numbered.

"You ask Doc (Rivers) or Isiah (Thomas) or anybody that has ever played that position, (the point guard) has got to be an extension of the coach," Brown said after conducting a three-hour charity basketball clinic for Hoops 4 Hope along with Thomas and Rivers. "He has to make everybody on the team better. He's the front line of your defense. When the other team scores, when the other team misses, he's the first guy that has to be back. On offense he has to be involved in the offense and get other people involved.

"Your best player usually ends up with the ball at the end of the (shot) clock. I always think that if you have a point guard who doesn't give it up early, he doesn't make other people better.

"But with Stephon it's important for a coach to maximize what he does best. If we need him to score the ball, hopefully I'll recognize that. If we need him to be a combination of both, we'll explore that. My first thing is, I know he wants to be coached. My second thing is, I know he wants to win, so we're way ahead of the curve right now."

Marbury has extended an olive branch to his new coach, calling him last week and encouraging him to take the job. In recent interviews, Marbury has raved about Brown as a coach and a teacher.

The proof, however, will come when Brown gets Marbury in the gym and the two start working together. Brown demands that his point guard move the ball and play defense. Marbury is regarded as more of a scoring point guard and takes only a passing interest in defense.

"To me, a superstar makes other players around him better and wins games," Brown said.

When asked if Marbury is a superstar, Brown replied: "I think he has the ability to do that. I thought his growth in Athens on a daily basis was tremendous. But you've got to know about people's personalities in order to coach them. You have to know how far you can go in terms of pushing them. But as long as I know somebody wants to be coached and cares, you've got a heck of a shot. I get that sense about him.

"The only thing that unnerves me is that the only question I get is about Stephon Marbury. And they didn't win 33 games because of him or lose 49. It's a team game, so collectively we've got to figure out a way to get better and it's going to start with defense, and sharing the ball, rebounding the ball, playing smart and everybody's got to do it." </div>

I agree with how the article says if marbury and brown work together the knicks could find themselves in the playoffs. But if they clash and don't work together they can find themselves on the outside looking in.

i think this year Marbury will become a more better team leader with the help of Larry Brown.Brown can change Marbury's losing fate and turn it into a winning dream.Always needing the help of your teemates and I think that Big Q.Richardson skills can help Marbury's spirit. And now that we have a big center in James.Marbury will have more confidence in passing and looking for the open man.Better than push it to the basket himself.
