Without saying it, Thomas is taking a gamble that Curry, a skilled 22-year-old, 6-11 center, will remain healthy. The Knicks reportedly signed Curry to a six-year, $56 million contract. It is unlikely that the contract will be insured.

"We all need to be careful," Thomas cautioned. "You've given him a condition and you don't know. I haven't read where one doctor has said he has (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)."

Thomas added: "Believe me, if something is there, I think the people we have examining him will find it."

Thomas claimed that the Knicks researched Curry's health throughout the summer but was vague on how the team was able to monitor the condition of a player under contract with another organization. Curry worked out in a public gym with a personal trainer in Chicago over the summer, and it's conceivable that the Knicks sent staff members to watch those workouts.

"What we've read in the newspaper and watching him perform, word of mouth led us to the point where we said if we think this guy is healthy then you make the trade," Thomas said. "If he passes the physical then we've done something really good."

Curry averaged a career-high 16.1 points last season for the Bulls. However, he has been criticized for being soft defensively and not rebounding enough.

"He's 22," Brown said. "The guys in Detroit told me he's as tough to guard on the post as anyone. These kids don't come along."

Brown said that the Pistons were interested in acquiring Curry while Thomas claimed that many teams tried to trade for him, although he did not name any teams. Clearly, the Knicks have the resources to pay the contract even if he is unable to play. Plus, the franchise is so desperate for a winner that Thomas felt Curry was too good to pass up.

Wow, that's quite a compliment (the bold). If he can get his rebounding averages up and improve his defense, he'll be one of the best players in the league.

Curry is a very good post player, as he proved last year. Being the top scorer on a very good up and coming Bulls team. He however is a terrible defender and rebounder. Larry is going to have his toughest job ever trying to get these Knicks to play defense. The Knicks should be fun to watch offensively but the question is do they have enough to get key stops late in close games? I'm not so sure they do.

Brown is right, but don't get to excited. Back in the day he supported a trade and after the first practice he actually tried to trade back the player.
