Larry Brown was almost a Celtics assistant coach this summer

QUOTE

The Boston Celtics had already traded for Ray Allen and were on the verge of acquiring Kevin Garnett, yet coach Doc Rivers had one more coup in mind. This summer he almost hired Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown to join the Celtics as his lead assistant, SI.com has learned.

"The way we left it, I told Doc I was 90 percent sure I was coming," says Brown. But Brown changed his mind after discussing the Boston offer with 76ers owner Ed Snider, who convinced Brown to remain as executive VP in charge of basketball.

When Brown said no to Rivers in July -- shortly before the blockbuster trade that delivered Garnett to Boston -- the Celtics filled the position by signing Tom Thibodeaux, the highly-regarded longtime assistant to Jeff Van Gundy.

I'm very happy with Tom Thibodeau, but wow, this is something to think about.

Larry Brown is not really a good basketball coach.

Still, he would be a very good assistant. Boston I think is going to coach themselves. When you have 3 guys like they do, they know the game, they will run there own offense. Doc Rivers, in my opinion isn't a very good coach either.

I agree. They're veterans, have been in the league for a long time, have gone through different coaches. They know all the stuff already. lol

But he wouldn't have been bad to have as an assistant.

hm...well, he won an NCAA championship and an NBA championship. Maybe you meant Doc?

I'd say he's not a great NBA coach, and more of an NCAA coach.

That really would have been something, Larry Brown working under[Stephen A. Smith's voice] Doc Rivers.

I don't think you can call someone who coached a team to an NBA title a bad coach. The mess in New York was bound to happen with the roster they have there.

Come on Prem, I know you like to stir it up, but Larry Brown is an EXCELLENT basketball coach. As noted, he has an NCAA championship and an NBA championship. Take away the mess in NY - which is still a mess - and he has an unbelievable resume. He's a hell of a teacher, and a hell of a coach. Many players, even ones who at the time he was thier coach clashed with him, in retrospect say he was the best thing to happen to them inbasketball. And this includes A.I. I'd take him in any role he wanted here, in a second.

Wonder if he'll become the coach if say Doc is fired after this season. (or maybe during the season if things aren't going well)

I wouldn't want him as an assistant because I wouldn't want him as the coach if Doc ever did get fired.

Who do you want as the coach if Doc gets fired? (or lets say when he gets fired)

Right now I'm comfortable with Doc as the coach until he proves he can't coach a team thats actually talented.

I have no idea who would be good to replace him if he got fired, but I just dont like Larry Brown.

I really like Doc as well. A lot of other celtics fans don't like him. I say give him the chance first, and I'm sure he'll do a good job. Now that he has 3 allstars and a good bench, he should do fine.

I like the assistant we have, the defensive guy, theabeau or something. lol

As a fan of another team, I'm really disappointed that Larry the clown didn't take the position. I'll just take satisfaction in the fact he'll continue to screw the Sixers.

Larry the clown is the most over rated coach in the history of the NBA. He created the disfunction in NY. Before him, it was just a mess

I'll disagree with that, I don't think Larry Brown created disfunction in New York... the players did, because they were too selfish and unwilling to listen to an established coach. Obviously, LB is a "my way or the highway" kind of guy, but the problem was that so was entire roster. The Knicks are/were full of selfish ego's, and they could have listened to improve themselves as a team. Instead, they choose to run their own brand of basketball, refuse to listen, and have unnecessary flame wars with him through the media.

Larry the clown went through the media first. He is the one that wanted Francis on the team (and no one is more dysfunctional and selfish than him). He made no attempts to coach that team, instead he purposely sabotaged it because he wanted Dolan to get rid of Zeke. The Knicks players didn't refuse to listen to him, rather they were played like a fiddle by the clown.

Larry the clown is a cold, calculating selfish SOB that only cares about 1 thing, Larry.

Again NY was a mess, and LB is certainly partly to blame. But that also is a mess of a team with ZERO court leadership. It's not like after LB left they tore up the league. LB has delivered NCAA and NBA champioships, took the Sixers to the finals, etc. He has delivered. Tough to be over rated when you produce for as many years as he did.
