<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">ESPN - Is LeBron James smarter than his counterparts, Dwyane Wade of the Heat and Carmelo Anthony of the Nuggets? While Wade and Anthony have both agreed to five year, $80M extensions with their respective teams, it was assumed that LeBron James had done the same with the Cavs. Maybe not says Stephen A. Smith. According to a report on ESPN, sources have told Smith that James will instead accept a four year, $60 million deal from the Cavaliers, and he can opt out of the deal after three seasons. He could have very good reason to settle for less now. With the NBA's collective bargaining agreement set to expire at the end of the 2010-11 season, James could be positioning himself for an even bigger payday as a free agent when the cap goes up. Under a new agreement, James and other big stars could be in line for deals in the neighborhood of six years and up to $150 million. That a superstar would ask to be paid less than that max would be a groundbreaking maneuver. According to Smith, James discussed the deal he was planning to sign with both Wade and Anthony, and it's unsure if the move by James will affect the agreements made by both Wade and Anthony with the Heat and Nuggets respectively.</div> Source
I did say he already has a lot of money, but I would also want the most money I could get. Plus like others have said in the other thread, he can opt out if they team isn't doing well and if he wants to leave and sign with another team. Good move by I'm guessing his agent.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting SP23:</div><div class="quote_post">Good move by I'm guessing his agent.</div>His agent (Maverick Carter) is just a HS buddy of his. I can't believe he's the one thinking these things up either.

If someone offered you $2,000,000 and someone else offered you $1,000,000 would you take the second offer? These guys are just making the most money they can so that they will be set for life along with their present family and family members generations from now. The NBA is a business and if you can get that much money, why wouldn't you?

I mean, he'll make 80 million in 5 years, plus all of his endorsments he already has and will get, and then get ANOTHER max contract after this contract. Add it all up, and he is one rich mofo.
Swish is right. No matter what anyone says. When you in a situation to make MAX Cash you will TAKE IT. We can say, "Oh, I would do this" or "I would take less." When the contract offers come, you take the BIG DEAL. The NBA is business first. Its not like HS or College hoops where the GLORY is only on the COURT.
Especially for a kid like LeBron who was always just getting by with his mom when he was younger. He knows the importance of getting as much as you can and he wants to make sure his kids and grandkids never have to live the way he did when he was a child.
OMG I HATE WEN PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT CRAP LIKE THIS. its just ilke johnny damon everyone was like hes a sellout and w/e but everyone knows dam well they would of done the same thing
maybe LBJ just doesn't want to be locked up for more than 3 years... if other players leave and waht not and the team is no longer in playoff contention he might wanna opt out and go somewhere else who knows? i think lebron is just making sure he's got lots of options in front of him for the future. like most have you said, he's got a stack of cash, it's not like he's gonna miss a few mill here and there.
Why the hell the NBA insists on letting people know what their players make is beyond me. (or any sport for that matter) I could care less who gets paid what. Does it affect you or I? No. I watch basketball for the game itself, not to worry about financial decisions made by players and crique their choices as to why they did this or that.

Also the league doesn't publish the contracts of players. Most estimates are done from independent sources to give fans a rough figure of what a player's salary is. Personally I think it's great to know what the players are making, because as a fan I want to look at the roster and see who's earning his money each game. It helps evaluate whether or not your team is making the right decisions when there's player movement.
This is a little off topic, but how rediculous is it that a guy makes 20 million dollars a year on top of his 100 million dollar nike deal, and contless other sponsorships for playing basketball? What kind of lifestyle recquires more than 5 mil a year?
Cavs' fans are already jumping out of their seats. Cavs have him locked for 3 years, and already fans are talking about how is going to bolt right after the 3rd year. Maybe he just wants more money, and doesn't plan on leaving the Cavs. On a recent poll in Cleveland, 70% believe that he will leave after the 3rd year. Wow....that's true faith.

The Browns still suck, Jordan over Ehlo, the countless years the Cavs sucked, Boozer lying to everyone and bolting. I wouldn't be too optimistic either, but I think LeBron is just setting himself up for more money after. I highly doubt he leaves Cleveland after this contract.
i wouldnt understand y he would leave getting paid millions a year for doing something hes best at on a team that is developing
