Why is that funny or weird? "Person of the year" doesn't mean nicest or best person...it means most influential on events. LeBron James was definitely a candidate for the person who most influenced NBA events...you had teams clearing out payroll for him, wooing him, news teams in every city trying to find out where he'd end up.
My list would include: *some Tea Party candidate ..maybe Glen Beck who kind of symbolized the voice of the Tea Party and frustration in the country which resulted in this past election (hate when they make person of the year a group of people) *Manny Paquiao (people are speaking of him as they spoke of Muhammad Ali) *Mark Zuckerberg (facebook has really blown up something proper) Using Time's criteria, the person of the year should really be "The Tea Party"
LeBron influenced nothing at all of any importance. It's absurd to even consider him. Lady Gaga? Ditto. Since it supposedly honors a person or group who "has done the most to influence the events of the year," I'm pretty sure none of the 25 they named qualify.
