https://www.koin.com/sports/barlow-...-elusive-feat-for-head-coach-tom-johnson/amp/ Tom Johnson wins his first ever title after 39 years at Barlow. He coached Fred Jones and some other Barlow greats. This happens to be extra cool to me because he’s a good friend of my parents from their Roosevelt days. Grew up next to my mom. That Roosevelt team would’ve been stacked had AC Green not chose to go to Benson instead of his neighborhood school. https://www.si.com/high-school/oreg...-basketball-6a-championship-game-01jpc5mc6brc
This happens so often in high school nowadays. Oregon City girls has had enough talented kids go to other schools that we could have won state two or three times in the last five or six years. In fact, we may have been able to win state with just the girls that left... Almost makes you feel stupid for being loyal to "your" school. I'm glad Barlow got it done for such a quality and loyal coach. Congratulations to Coach!
Yeah it’s been happening in North Portland for ages. Whether kids go to Benson, Central or Jesuit. So much talent is pried out of North Portland. The Scarlett brothers was a good example. Grew up in Roosevelt area but ended up going to Central Catholic. Then made it to the NFL. The list could go on and on. Which makes it even more special when Roosevelt achieves success. Because their talent pool is plucked. I’m sure it’s similar between Oregon city and West Linn.
Yep. But West Linn pulls from everybody. Tualatin is starting to as well. It's frustrating because I don't necessarily blame the kids. If you build a great program (or have great amenities) people will come. It just seems the people who are given the responsibility of building programs at most schools either don't know how, or don't care to do it well. So again, it's tough to blame the kids or their families for choosing the better situation for themselves. I just feel like it takes some of the fun out of it.
Was Damon supposed to go to Grant or Jefferson? Imagine if he went to Grant and teamed up with Terrell Brandon...tho I think Damon would've been a freshman in Terrells senior year, right? Granted, Grant won in his SR year, so it's not like it would've changed things in that regard.
Damon was right on that Jeff, Grant border….played summer ball with all grant and Jeff guys. TB was class of ‘88 and Damon was class of ‘91. But GHS had a couple guys almost as good as Terrell, so did Jeff. So it was a wise move for him to go to Wilson to be THE MAN. His cousin had just done the same thing, and shot out to Jesuit. Funny thing about that, those Wilson teams only played like 8 guys and they all should have been at GHS or Jeff. God damn there was a TON of talent in the PIL back then. Those Benson teams were tough back then too.
I remember some stacked Benson teams back in late 90’s. Boomer Brazzle and company. Then of course that super hyped a Jeff team in the early 00’s with Aaron Miles and Michael Lee
