Leinart won’t ask for a trade

At a time when conventional wisdom (which, as a conventional matter, isn’t) points to Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart requesting a trade in the wake of the team’s decision to give quarterback Kurt Warner a two-year, $23 million deal, Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports that Leinart won’t be asking to be moved.

Leinart said so himself on Saturday at a flag football game to benefit Kurt Warner’s foundation.

In our view, Leinart’s willingness to sit behind Warner for at least one if not two years will only raise questions as to whether Leinart has the appropriate level of passion for the game, and confidence in his abilities. Really, would Favre or Brady or Manning (either one of them) be content to sit behind Warner for even another minute?

For his non-work, Leinart will receive base salaries of $1.11 million in 2009 and $2.485 million in 2010. In 2011 (assuming the final year isn’t voidable), the base salary shoots to $7.36 million.

I think he should sit back and continue to learn from Warner. Maybe he can get his career on track.
