Lincecum dazzles in 12-strikeout victory

Tim Lincecum ended his June slump in electrifying fashion Thursday, striking out 12 and yielding three hits in seven innings as the Giants edged the Minnesota Twins, 2-1.

Having posted an 0-2 record with a National League-worst 7.59 ERA in his previous four starts this month, Lincecum showed the Twins, whom he had never faced, how he won two Cy Young Awards. The right-hander grew stronger as the afternoon progressed, striking out nine of the final 12 batters he confronted. That included striking out the side in the fourth and seventh innings.

Lincecum (6-6), who recorded his fourth double-digit strikeout game of the season and the 30th of his career, allowed only two runners to reach scoring position. Michael Cuddyer doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the sixth to advance Alexi Casilla to second base. But Lincecum, who allowed opponents to bat .343 with runners in scoring position in his previous five games, extinguished both threats.

The Giants, who entered the game ranked last in the Majors in scoring, mustered their lone run off Twins starter Brian Duensing (4-7) in the second inning. Pablo Sandoval singled with one out, reached third base on Pat Burrell's double and scored on Miguel Tejada's grounder to shortstop.

The Giants loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning as Tejada doubled, Lincecum walked and Aaron Rowand grounded a single off third baseman Danny Valencia's glove. Bill Hall's fielder's-choice grounder ended the uprising. They again filled the bases with two outs in the seventh for Hall, who lined out to left field off reliever Alex Burnett.

Against Twins reliever Glen Perkins, Aubrey Huff doubled and scored on Cody Ross' single to pad the Giants' lead in the eighth, which proved vital when Brian Wilson surrendered a run in the ninth before locking up his 21st save.
