Litsch impresses in first spring start

Sunday, March 1 Blue Jays at the plate: Toronto fans were able to get a glimpse of David Cooper, the team's first-round selection from last June's Draft. Cooper played first and got the Jays' first hit of the game, a line-drive single to right field in the third inning. Sean Shoffitt got his first hit of the spring, a two-run single in the seventh.

Rays at the plate:Carl Crawford hit his first triple of the spring, a shot into the right-field corner in the third inning that drove home Jason Bartlett for the Rays' first run. Crawford then scored on Pat Burrell's sacrifice fly to put Tampa Bay up, 2-0. Burrell's drive normally would have been a home run, but he hit the ball straight into the teeth of the wind blowing in from left field. Crawford added his second triple of the spring in his next at-bat.
Blue Jays on the mound: Right-hander Jesse Litsch, who is competing to be the team's No. 2 starter, made his first start of the spring and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout. Ken Takahashi left the game limping after fielding Fernando Perez's fourth-inning bunt. The left-hander still managed to throw out Dioner Navarro at the plate on the play.
Rays on the mound: Jason Hammel, who is competing with David Price, Mitch Talbot and Jeff Niemann for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, stated his case Sunday with four scoreless innings. The right-hander limited the Blue Jays to three hits, walked one and struck out three.

Litsch was solid last season. He should be a lock in the starting rotation.

I always have optimism with the Jays before the season. That is usually gone by May

Honestly, this year I'm more interested in the Jays' 2010 season. I think this one's a wash already. But hearing about Litsch and David Cooper play well is real encouraging.
