http://www.nypost.com/sports/jets/52641.htm<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>August 27, 2005 -- At some point this morning, when Herman Edwards becomes brave enough to break down the film from last night's epic struggle between the Jets and Giants at the Meadowlands ? a 15-14 Giants' win (more on that in a moment) ? he's going to have to decide whether to laugh or cry. Chad Pennington, one week removed from a near-perfect performance in his 2005 preseason debut, looked as poor as he's ever looked in his career, finishing 5-of-11 for 36 yards, with two interceptions and a lost fumble. But those statistics, as poor as they were, didn't tell a fraction of the story. Both of Pennington's INTs came in the Giants' end zone. Neither ball should have been thrown. "I'm going to chalk it up as a learning experience and move on," Pennington, very disappointed, said after the game. "This was a chance to go out and play well, and I didn't. I lost that chance. This was an opportunity squandered." It should be noted that in Pennington's regular-season NFL career, he's never thrown an interception in the red zone. Pennington is 85-of-131 (65.6 percent) for 519 yards, 39 TDs and no INTs inside the opponents' 20-yard line. "I'm glad it happened in preseason," Curtis Martin said of the Jets' embarrassing performance on offense, which included six first downs overall (one in the second half, two after the opening drive) and 109 total yards (18 in the second half). Pennington's first gaffe, which wasted a 13-play, 69-yard opening drive, came when he tried to force a lofted pass to Laveranues Coles in the right corner of the end zone with Giant CB Corey Webster all over him before making the pick. The Jets' second offensive possession came to an aggravating end when Pennington was stripped by Giant DE Michael Strahan. The ball was recovered by LB Antonio Pierce at the Jets' 24-yard line with 12:27 remaining in the first half and it led to the second of five Jay Feely field goals. Later, Pennington, with loads of time, tried to force a pass into TE Chris Baker and was picked off in the end zone by Strahan. Enough bad news for a moment. Now for some slapstick comedy. The Jets scored their two touchdowns by simply falling on the football in the Giants' end zone. On the first play after Strahan's INT of Pennington, Giant QB Tim Hasselbeck and RB Michael Cloud ran into each other during the handoff exchange and fumbled the ball in the end zone, where Jets DE Bryan Thomas fell on it for a TD, leading to a stunning 7-6 Jets' lead. Later, after Feely's 54-yard FG gave the Giants a 9-7 lead, the Jets were handed another gift TD ? literally. Giant third-string QB Jesse "The Bachelor" Palmer sent a pitch intended for former Jet draft pick Derrick Ward flying into the end zone, where Jet LB Ryan Myers fell on the ball for a TD, leading to a 14-9 Jet lead. Two more Feely FGs (a 35-yarder in the third quarter and a 33-yarder in the fourth) mercifully ended the Jets' calamitous night, handing them their first preseason loss of this summer and ending a nine-game preseason winning streak against the Giants. "I leave this game concerned with how we played," Edwards said. "You can't turn the ball over like that in the gold zone and win games. That's not smart football. We've got a lot of work to do."</div>
