Little John to join Matty Ice in Atlanta?

L.J. Smith could be the newest weapon added to the Atlanta Falcons' arsenal according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a playmaking tight end the team has lacked since the loss of Alge Crumpler.

Roddy White had another outstanding campaign in 2008, but his 88 catches were 33 more than the following receiver on the Falcons' roster, Michael Jenkins. In order to find a tight end on the team's receiving stat register, one has to look to Justin Peelle, a player who has made a living more as a blocker during his seven seasons. In Smith, the Falcons would have the type of down-the-middle weapon that could draw safeties away from doubling up on White. This situation would put many defenses on their heels to defend against the pass, a scenario that would have running back Michael Turner and the Falcons' offensive linemen licking their chops.

Smith, a proud Rutgers grad, reached career pinnacles during the 2005 season with 61 catches for 682 yards. He has seen his role decrease over the last two seasons, but would form a great complement to White in Mike Mularkey's system.
