With how poorly the left & the right govern, I've often wondered why Libertarians haven't garnered more votes. Maybe they're portrayed too closely with the right?

Libertarians ARE garnering more votes. Ron Paul finished in 4th place in primaries in 2008 that he finished in 2nd place in 2012. And the whole tea party platform is mostly Libertarian ideas; we're talking about garnering ~30% support for tea party at this point, and ~40 elections they won.
