<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>"I don't feel a need to respond," Torre said yesterday. "I feel comfortable with who I am. I don't try to make evaluations to be honest with you." </p>

Lofton, who played poorly for the Yankees in 2004 when he criticized Torre for not batting him leadoff and using him as a designated hitter and not a center fielder in the first week of the season, backed Sheffield. </p>

"All I can say is that Sheffield knows what he is talking about," Lofton, the Rangers' center fielder and leadoff hitter who has played for 11 teams, said to the Associated Press.</div></p>

I dont see how Torre could be running the team in a racist fashion for this long in NY under that media scrutiny and no story ever found its way to the papers....it just doesnt seem possible to me....I think this is just Sheff being Sheff....but, this is atypical of Lofton who is not normally controversial, and must feel like he was wronged by the Yankees to some extent....

Lofton was upset early that he was DHed and wasn't the leadoff hitter. I think if Sheff worded what he said more carefully, he would be taken more seriously. </p>
