QUOTE

No Room
Sep 18 - Expect Dikembe Mutombo to sign for the $1.2 million veteran's exception, a huge difference to the Rockets from the $1.9 exception they could have offered.

When Mutombo shows up for the start of camp, however, David Falk's other Rockets client, John Lucas III, seems unlikely to join him.

GM Daryl Morey said Monday there is some renewed interest in Lucas. Morey has been trying to find a home for Lucas -- outnumbered in the Rockets' very crowded backcourt -- since July. He had a deal in place with the Hornets, but the third team involved went another direction and the Rockets and Hornets could not find another team to bring in.

Even if they move or release Lucas, with Mutombo's signing imminent and second-round pick Carl Landry's expected (nothing new on the negotiations impasse), the Rockets would have 19 players Oct. 1. Of those, Bob Sura has $1 million guaranteed, Mike Harris about $50,000. With Mutombo, at least 16 contracts would be fully guaranteed.
