Virginia Tech starting linebacker Lyndell Gibson will have season-ending surgery on his shoulder next week at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg and will miss the Discover Orange Bowl game against Stanford.

Gibson, who suffered a left scapular fracture during the second quarter of the ACC championship game against Florida State, had a CT scan and met with doctors Tuesday. A full recovery is expected in six to eight months, according to head athletic trainer Mike Goforth.

Gibson was fourth on the team in tackles with 66, had six tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries, two sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
