"Will you know before the game? Will you know after the game?" the Suns coach said Lampe asked him.

Monday, the Suns activated the 18-year-old center from the injured list and placed Antonio McDyess on the list with tendinitis in his left knee.

But being activated and actually playing don't necessarily equate. D'Antoni said before the game against the Lakers that Lampe might get some mop-up minutes or be used in the event of foul trouble.

"I would like to see how he responds first," D'Antoni said. "We have a good thing going. I don't think we want to go experimenting. But if fouls or the situation warrants it, I'll try him and see how he reacts. Then we can build on it from there."</div>
