<div class="quote_poster">Quoting :</div><div class="quote_post">The Magic can't paint a rosier picture for themselves until they brush up on one area.

And that's in a statistic known as PIP: Points In Paint.

That's the points a team earns inside the painted rectangular area close to the basket.

The Magic have been outscored in the paint in 16 of their 24 games. It's why teams are shooting 44 percent against them, sixth-highest in the league.

The Magic's defense is giving up way too many easy buckets, basically rolling out a red carpet and showing other players the way to their goal with flares. But then that is why they are ranked near the bottom in nearly every major defensive category.</div>

    Full Story

The main reason they are doing so bad this season is because of their defense. (Or lack of it)

But, the past few games have given everything a positive outlook since they have won 3 out of 4. Hopefully things will only get better..and they will look to go in the paint more.

They let the other team get way too many uncontested shots in the paint.

Way too many. Hopefully we can change it around tonight against the Bulls. Lately though, we've been just playing Gooden and Howard most of the game and not having a true center, so that could be a reason why we're giving up so many pts down low.

The Magic, when they go to Howard/Gooden frontcourt tandem, lack a shotblocker.

Thats huge. If you don't know why, I suggest you read KoK's Shotblocking post.............you'll need to search for it.

But the point is, the Magic have no one who can contest shots. DeClerq, although bigger, isn't that either. Hunter is probably the best at it, but he has too frail of a frame to hold up for 30+ min.

Nope. The reality is that you gotta trade Juwan, even if its for a loss, to get a shot blocker. Even if its someone like Ervin Johnson. As long as they can put a big body in the paint, its better than what the Magic have now.

Maybe they can coerce Gheorghe Muresan to come out of retirement.

Z is untouchable for the Cavs, especially for another power forward, who would just bite into Booz' minutes. Like I said, the Magic might have to take a loss, but that's what good GM's do. Think '88, Oakley for Cartwright.

I say, start Hunter. Give him more minutes. He's the shotblocker that we need. I think he played 2 mins last night and he blocked a shot in the 2 minutes.

Hunter does have the best overall stats of the group, leading in points, rebounds and blocks.

I mean start Gooden and start Hunter. Hunter needs more time, I hate Declerq, I have no idea why he plays so much? Johnny Davis loves him and hates Hunter for some strange reason.

A big weakness for Hunter though is he doesn't rebound like someone his size should.
