Maholm twirls three-hit shutout against Cubs

The offense owed it to starter Paul Maholm to not allow the left-hander the chance to endure another hard-luck loss by way of no run support. Such a possibility was taken out of play with a five-run fourth, and Maholm rode the big day from the offense on his way to one of the most dominant performances of his career.

It all led to the Pirates' 10-0 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Saturday, giving the Bucs four straight road wins for the first time since 2008.

Despite his record -- which now sits at 2-7 -- Maholm has been a steady and reliable presence in the Pirates' rotation all year. On Saturday, he was spectacular. Needing only 91 pitches to finish nine innings, Maholm retired the first 13 hitters of the game and gave up only three hits. The shutout was the third of his career.

The first two hits came consecutively in the fifth, with the first just out of the reach of Andrew McCutchen as the center fielder backed up to the outfield wall. An infield single followed, but Maholm ended the inning with two quick outs. He also allowed an infield single in the ninth.

The win was the left-hander's first since April 25, even though Maholm had given up only 12 earned runs in his five starts since then. The problem all season has been run support. The Pirates had scored 13 runs for him in his first 10 starts, which is why Saturday's 10-run outburst was such a big deal.
