Duane Brown works for the Grand River Conservation Authority at App's Mill but in his off-hours he can usually be found at the nearby Brant Conservation Area. Using a telescope and a video camera, he has been following — at a safe distance — a family of bald eagles that occupy a nest in the conservation area. “I just try to see what they're up to ... follow them during the different stages of nesting,” Brown said. “In November and December they'll start bringing sticks to the nest and start hanging around really close to each other,” he said. “The eggs are laid around February and over the winter they have to defend the area because there are a group of eagles that come to the Grand River for food. “These are migrants, some adults but mostly immature eagles and if they come close to the nest, they are chased away.” A pair of bald eagles took over a red tail hawk's nest in Brant Park about five years ago. They added some sticks but didn't lay any eggs that year. They came back the next year, brought some more sticks and laid some eggs.
