    Here's a NYT map that shows the change in vote patterns between 2004 and 2008. An area that is blue indicates that the area shifted to more Democrat than it was four years ago.

    (This was actually a pretty deceptive map, as it took up a huge part of the page and gave the impression Democrats won most of the country. In fact, if Bush won a county by 14% and McCain won it by just 7%, it went blue.)

    Still, the essential lesson I take from this is that Republicans only increased their support in Arizona (McCain's state) and some of the more rural areas of the south. When I think of a black man running for president, it's not hard to imagine him doing poorly in those southern counties.

    This map also reflects the deepening problems Republicans are having with Hispanics. Southern Texas and California and northern Nevada are the deepest blues on the map.

    In all the places I've lived in the US, not a single county in which I resided went red this year.
