A doctor was quoted as saying Maradona was in hospital in Uruguay suffering from hypertension and irregular heartbeat. But he is now reported to be out of danger.

"The initial prognosis is favourable," said Dr Waldemar Correa, director of the Cantegril Clinic in the resort town of Punta del Este, where the former player had been on holiday.

"He is currently being monitored and observed. Should there be no complications, he should have a short stay."

Dr Frank Torres of the hospital's intensive care unit added that Maradona had entered the clinic at about 1730 GMT, and said he also had high blood pressure. </div>
