As Juan Roman Riquelme's compensation battle with Villarreal continues, Diego Maradona has a message for his countryman: don't quit...

Diego Maradona has urged Juan Roman Riquelme not to give up on his quest for compensation from Villarreal.

The troubled Argentina midfielder is all but set for a return to Boca Juniors, but there remains some unfinished financial business between Roman and Villarreal director Juan Manuel Llaneza.

Maradona said of this news, "What I ask of Roman, based on what he's gone through, is not to give up to Llaneza or to anyone."

The former Barcelona legend apparently deems the club hierarchy ungrateful, and feels that they owe Roman a great deal.

"When Roman was in his glory, reaching the semifinals of the Champions League at Villarreal on TV, it was because of Roman."

With Boca set to sign the 28 year old player once more, Maradona couldn't be happier.

"The manager [Miguel Russo], and the club, and the people here have all done so much, but the greatest merit of the team is to bring Roman here in all his splendour," he remarked.

"I'd have loved to have done the same, and not have been 34 when I came back, and to have taken part in the Copa Libertadoes as well, but things were not so."

Boca lost 2-1 to Tigre on Wednesday, ending their chances of winning the Apertura title, but Maradona remains upbeat.

"They can beat Lanus and end the championship well as they prepare for the World Club Cup," he remarked ahead of the encounter with the "great" league leaders.
