Stephon Marbury's appeal of the Knicks' attempt to dock him one game's pay -- about $182,000 -- for leaving the team for a game last month was filed automatically by the NBA Players Association, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The player does not have to request the appeal.

Neither Marbury nor the team has expressed any intention of backing down in the dispute. A hearing is expected to be scheduled for sometime before the All-Star break in mid-February. -- Newsday</div>
