<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">DALLAS - The list of things that rile up friendly forward Shawn Marion is a short one. Don't crack a joke about his shooting form, because he does not think it's funny. Don't act like his great season came out of nowhere, because he believes he has been consistently All-Star worthy. And now there is a new one, thanks to the NBA coaches: Don't disrespect his defense. Marion was left off the NBA All-Defensive first and second teams. Of the 29 coaches besides Mike D'Antoni (who could not vote for his own players), 24 left Marion off their first- and second-team ballots. This season, Marion became only the second player in 32 seasons (David Robinson, 1991-1992) to finish in the top five in rebounds and steals. At 6 feet 7, Marion also averaged 1.5 blocks while guarding power forwards and centers. Marion finished fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting that is done by the media, yet was tied for 15th on the coaches' All-Defensive team ballots.</div> Source
You know, I've never been all that impressed with Marion defensively, and if the coaches are the ones who are saying he's not all that great, I'm inclined to believe them...
Take it out on Dallas, Mr Marion. One of those cases where the people in the team deserved to be there, and someone had to be unlucky. Kiri was a monster shot blocker, but only played half a season. I guess that wasn't taken into consideration
coaches The coaches just reaffirmed what I have said for a while now. He is an excellent defensive SF and is great against smaller PFs. But against most PFs he becomes a slightly-above average defender.
I think the ugly jumper just pops into people's heads and makes them forget about the rest of his game ... which is tight. (I'm only half-joking, but he's got a gawd-awful jumper. Truly wretched.)
I was shocked at first but after looking at the forwards that made it in front of him you have to understand that they are very good defensive forwards as well. Duncan, Garnett, Price, and Kirilenko all deserved it as well and if you put Marion in for Price you can make a case that Price deserves to be on the all-defensive team. Like TheMatrix said, take it out on Dallas.
I think the fact that the suns are the worst defensive team in the nba gave the coachas the idea he cant play defense. He is a great defender though. I would have replaced AK with marion. The guy has barely played at all, how can you give him that much credit.
Garnett is there on name only. Disgraceful decision that he didn't een make the second team. Even Jason Kidd and Chauncey Billups finished ahead of him!
really? <div class="quote_poster">Quoting ArizonaRecruite:</div><div class="quote_post">He has done a great job on Nowitzki all year. He is a very, very good defensive player.</div> he did a great job against Dirk all year? including the playoff dirk is putting up a shade under 23 ppg against the Suns. Also Dirk got 2.83 offensive boards per game against the Suns more than doubling his season average. Part of defense is defensive rebounding. Some great job huh?
In the regular season he held Nowitzki to 20 points per game. And he hasn't done a bad job at all this series. He also averaged more than 11 rebounds a game. He is a very good defensive player, it is a disgrace not to put him on the 2nd team at least. He also average 2 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game.

Marion should have made one of the teams, bottom line. Marion is an athletic, strong, on the basketball defender and also has the ability to block shots and create plays by reading passing lanes. I'm actually shocked he didn't make it, especially considering he is the best defensive player on the best team in the NBA.
A lot of the awards are debateable. A lot of people thought that Shaq should've been MVP and Rick Carlisle should've been COY. You don't see them making excuses.
Horrible snub. If there was one player that should have made the list it was Marion. I mean if they dude is being touted as a possible DPOY he should have AT LEAST made the 1st or 2nd team. What the hell were the voters thinking? How the hell do you average 11.3 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 2 steals a game and not be voted in? <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> The coaches just reaffirmed what I have said for a while now. If you are an EXCELLENT defender you should make the team regardless of position.
Whether he deserves to make it or not he shouldn't have made excuses. Again, those awards and events are debatable. Be happy for the people who earned it and try harder next season.
Marion is an awesome defender, IMO...I wouldve put him on the list instead of AK47, simply because Marion played in many more games, and also for, record-wise, the best team in the league...but everyone gets snubbed at one point or another, so Marion should just put it behind him and take his aggression out on the Mavs...
How does Marion finish fifth for the defensive player of the year, but not make either of the all-defensive teams? That does not make any sense when you look at it.
I have alot of respect for Marion and his game. He is an explosive offensive player and long-armed defender with quick feet. I don't think he is better than Duncan, Garnett, Kirilenko or Prince on defense, but he IS a good defender, no doubt.
