Teen flamethrower Carlos Martinez will be promoted by the St. Louis Cardinals to Low-A Quad Cities on Saturday so he can start for the affiliate that evening at Wisconsin.

Martinez, 19, will be making his North American debut.

The Dominican Republic native and righthander was signed by the Cardinals last summer for a $1.5-million bonus. He went 3-2 with a 0.76 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 59 innings for the Cardinals' Dominican Summer League team. Since spring training, Martinez has been pitching with the Cardinals' Extended Spring Training rosters. His promotion will become official Saturday, an official said.

Martinez will likely go four or five innings, as he's not yet conditioned for the full workload of a starter. The Cardinals' Low-A affiliate is using a six-man rotation, and that means if it continues as scheduled Martinez, one of the team's top three prospects according to many trade publications, will start the game at Busch Stadium featuring Quad Cities against Kane County on May 26.
