<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Versatility --- in one word, that is the basketball philosophy of Hawks general manager Billy Knight. He is not overly concerned with having the archetype for each position. For example, is North Carolina's Marvin Williams, who worked out for the Hawks at Philips Arena on Wednesday, big enough to play power forward in the NBA at 6 feet 8 1/4, 228 pounds --- what with the likes of San Antonio's 6-11, 260-pound Tim Duncan representing the league's pre-eminent power forward? Knight answers by observing that a possible three-forward lineup of Williams, Al Harrington and Josh Smith could be pretty potent. With many projecting Williams as one of the top two players available, the 19-year-old has a strong chance of landing here via the No. 2 overall pick the Hawks hold in Tuesday's NBA draft. "A lot of people have it etched in stone that everybody has to be a certain position --- you have to fit into a mold, but that really isn't the way that I look at it," Knight said. "If you had him, Josh Smith, Al Harrington, all those guys to me are forwards. They can play some at either position, and I think that's a positive for your team and for those players, so it gives them another opportunity to get on the floor. "If you say he's a power forward, he's got to play the power forward spot only. You say he's a forward, maybe you're going to go with three forwards, so he can get on the floor at any time. . . . There's such a thing as him being a basketball player." </div> Source
Man I hope we draft Marvin, It'd be the happiest day of my basketball related life. Marvin seems ideal to me, he's the most talented player in the draft, versatile and a nice guy. Marvin is going to be a great NBA player why not on the Hawks?
The Hawks should trade Harrington and aquire a PG or C. PG - Free Agent/Trade/Draft pick (Louis Williams?) SG - Josh Childress SF - Josh Smith PF - Marvin Williams C - Free Agent (Swift?)/Trade/Draft pick
Marvin has the most impressive physical tools-is far from the most "talented" at this point, most of his "skills" are basic, and some can only be assumed, since he didn't always use them. Marvin will find that the NBA ain't HS where his physical gifts can dominate even if his effort and focus is inconsistant. He is getting Hall-of Fame praise and yet guards were boxing him out with no trouble. I expect he WILL realize that "Star" is better than "Bust" and it's up to him to pay dues,at last. Just don't pencil the kid in as a starter too soon.
I don't share the same negative opinion of Williams exactly. My prediction is that he'll be a great scorer and good player, but I don't think he'll be much better than Harrington. He needs to get stronger, but in the NBA and with age/time, this is natural as long as the guy is hardworking. Really good basketball players don't need positions, so I don't think it'll be a problem, but he really does need to work on a lot of things. Williams seems to have a good head on his shoulders, though. Just to backup Rerem, though, there is a lot of evidence to back him up. In 2001, there was another highly coveted, 6'9" athletic forward with unbelievable potential. He also came out after college. His name? Rodney White. While the two players are not exactly the same (despite quite a lot of similarities), expectations should be realistic when talking about Williams.
