<td><font face="verdana" size="1">The top quarterback in the Class of 2009, Matt Barkley ended his recruitment early, giving a verbal commitment to Southern Cal on January 23. Barkley hails from Mater Dei High School, the same school that produced former star quarterback at USC, Matt Leinart. He was the first player in school history to start at quarterback on the varsity team as a freshman. Barkley was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year and won the Pete Maxwell Award at the conclusion of his junior season this past fall. He accumulated an impressive 3,560 and 35 touchdowns while leading his team to the Trinity League Title. His competition in California is some of the toughest in the country, so you know his numbers are legit.

Barkley excels in virtually every aspect of the game and has already mastered the quarterback position. He has a terrific arm and is able to make basically any throw he wants. His pocket presence is outstanding and he shows great patience under pressure; he's never forced into making a throw, thereby avoiding costly interceptions. His mobility is above average for a guy of his size and he has no problem making risky throws and completing them. If there's one area that Matt needs to improve on, it's his tendency to lock onto one receiver on certain plays. While he's able to get away with this on the high school level, it's definitely something he'll need to work on throughout his senior year. All-in-all, there's no doubt Matt has all the tools needed to be the next great QB at Southern Cal.</font></td>

Matt has been invited to the prestigious Elite 11 Camp held from July 21-24 in Southern California.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>This will be the 10th year of the Elite 11, which has developed into the premier quarterback event in the nation. The Elite 11 is a competition designed to give the best high school quarterbacks in the nation some top-level schooling by the best in the business.

Held in Southern California from July 21-24 this year, the Elite 11 will actually feature 12 of the best young high school quarterbacks competing amongst themselves and also receiving tutelage from top college counselors as well as the Elite 11 coaching staff.</div>

    Head of the Class

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Every year there is a recruit that stands out among the top players in the country because of their athleticism and poise under pressure. In 2009, the player that has separated himself from the other elite prospects across the country is USC quarterback commit Matt Barkley.

College coaches and recruiting experts have kept a close eye on the gifted gunslinger ever since he stepped under center as a freshman, to start at quarterback for Mater Dei High School, a program that has produced two Heisman Trophy winners, John Huarte and Matt Leinart.</div>

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The Mater Dei tourney gets underway at 3 p.m. Friday and its field includes the host Monarchs (who return four starters, including North Carolina-bound twins David and Travis Wear, from the team that lost only to Dominguez last season), Dominguez, Poly, Santa Margarita, JSerra, Capistrano Valley, Orange Lutheran and Diamond Ranch.

The championship is set for Sunday at 7 p.m.

Gahr will play host to 16 of the teams in the 64-team SCIBA event, which runs over the next two weekends. Martin Luther King of Riverside is the top seed.

A high school football game to etch into your viewing schedule, either in person at Veterans Stadium or via television (ESPN) on Sept. 3: Carson versus Mater Dei.

If you're wondering why the game is being played on a Wednesday (6 p.m.), the answer is: ESPN.

If you're assuming that the presence of quarterback Matt Barkley in a Mater Dei uniform is a significant reason why ESPN is televising the game, pat yourself on the back for being insightful.</div>

    ESPN

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>A popular question so I am going to give out this information again. The ESPN 150, the ranking of the top 150 prospects in America, is slated to be released on Aug. 5. We are still working hard to complete evaluations, and when the ESPN 150 is assembled, we will have a very deep pool of rated prospects to compile the list from.

The battle for No. 1 will be fierce -- will it be quarterback Matt Barkley (Santa Ana, Calif. / Mater Dei), the athletic, explosive Russell Shepard (Houston / Cypress Ridge), a defensive player like linebacker Manti Te'o (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou) or possibly someone else? It may seem a long way off, but it will be here sooner than you think!</div>

If Matt Barkley isn't the #1 rated prospect, then there is something seriously wrong with ESPN (as if we didn't already know that).

Football: Serra's Landers emerging as a quality prospect | LA Times

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Ted Landers hasn't receive much, if any, attention from NCAA Division I scouts. The lack of recognition up to this point is somewhat understandable, considering the quarterback from Gardena Serra plays the same position as Southland standouts such as Matt Barkley and Richard Brehaut.

Things, however, are beginning to change. Landers has been impressive during spring workouts and appears poised to break through this summer. Colorado and Oregon State are interested in the 6-foot-4 junior, according to these quotes. A trip to Nebraska looms as a possibility too.

Living in the shadow of Barkley and Brehaut can't be fun. Making matters worse is the fact that quarterbacks Allan Bridgford and Josh Nunes have typically been mentioned before Landers. But with continued improvement, the Cavaliers' signal-caller is carving out his niche.</div>

    Sunshine Pumping

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>We all know how good Norm Chow is so I won’t quibble with him there but his comments about DeWayne Walker were laughable. Calling Walker the best "D" coordinator in the Pac-10 is way off the base and last years results back that up. Walker is good but not great, he has lived off of 13-9 but the kool-aid drinkers across town seemed to have forgotten that Utah scored 44 on them. Notre Dame outscored them (with the worst offense in ND history) to give them their first win. What about the three straight losses to WSU, AZ, and ASU in which Walker’s vaunted defense gave up 27,34,24 points respectively? Lastly if Walker is such a hot commodity why is it that the only other legitimate offer he received this past off-season was to be the "D" coordinator at UW. The offer from Wazzu to be their head coach never really seemed to materialize and a lot of ucla fans thought it was Walker trying to increase his value.

More important...did Pete Carroll suddenly drop off the face the map? I mean he's a pretty good "D" coordinator don't you think Rick??

Kimbrel also made some comments about how Norm Chow was ecstatic to get Brehaut and how Chow thought that Brehaut might be better than 2009 USC commit Matt Barkley. What makes this laughable is that Brehaut was ucla’s 4th choice as they lost out on trying to get commits from Barkley, Newsome and Murray before focusing on trying to get Brehaut. What did Chow miss the first time around when evaluating prospective QB recruits that makes Brehaut a better QB than Matt Barkley?

I’m sure Brehaut is a great QB but if he is so hot why wasn’t he first on Chow’s list? These guys are supposed to be the experts. Experts don’t get lucky, they know exactly what they are doing. Slick Rick is going to get his share of recruits no question about it but getting great recruits is only part of the battle you have to win with them and the numbers have shown that Neuheisel actually has done worse with his recruits than when he takes over another coaches recruits.</div>

Football: Mater Dei wins Dana Hills passing tournament | LA Times

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>So much for all that talk about Mater Dei lacking receivers as targets for All-American quarterback Matt Barkley.

They were good enough Saturday to help the Monarchs defeat Los Alamitos, 28-26, in the championship game of the seven-on-seven Dana Hills passing tournament.

Derek Campbell, Andrew Roth and Sean Sierra were among the new receivers making contributions. Los Alamitos defeated Mater Dei, 27-26, earlier in the day.</div>

Mater Dei's Matt Barkley still at top of his game | LA Times

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The first major seven-on-seven passing competition of the summer Saturday at Dana Hills High was an opportunity to see whether Santa Ana Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley, the Gatorade national player of the year, would be able to prosper despite the loss of his receiving corps to graduation.

There were a couple of dropped passes and few signs of the special chemistry developed last season between quarterback and receiver, but the results showed that the Monarchs aren't far off from being a Pac-5 Division title contender.

"This is what it's about, baby!" Barkley said moments after throwing the winning touchdown in the Monarchs' 28-26 victory over Los Alamitos in the championship game.

Barkley's charisma, leadership and competitiveness seems to rub off on teammates. The USC-bound senior refuses to rest on last season's accomplishments, and he understands it's up to him to get his new group of receivers on the same page.

"In the end, I think they'll be able to put up the same numbers as last year," Barkley said.</div>

Recruits Talk About Early Signing Period | Scout.com

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Another player who verbally committed early, quarterback Matt Barkley from Mater Dei High School in California, thought that a later signing period would help recruits who didn’t have standout junior seasons, but did well in summer camps and had a breakout senior season.

“It [early signing day] could get things done quickly, but I think the later date after your senior season – it can give kids a chance to prove themselves in their senior season,” stated Barkley.

“Like a bunch of kids I know, who hadn’t had scholarships after their junior year, but after their junior year they got scholarships, so I think it’s an advantage to being after your senior year. That’s what I would prefer.”

Barkley however, decided to choose his school early on in the process, and like Shrive, chose an instate school: Southern Cal.

“I just knew Southern Cal was the school I wanted to go to, and why wait? I’m talking to other recruits and trying to get them to come to Southern Cal, so I figured it’s the best school for me, and I needed to help them out.”

An effect Barkley thought this would have on schools recruiting methods would make them decide on recruits even earlier then colleges currently do.

“Now schools are going to try and get the best players as quickly as they can. Southern Cal already does a pretty good job at that. I think now we have thirteen commitments in the ’09 class, but when the best schools out there see them they’re going to snag them.”</div>

Depth chart, competition among reasons for influx of early QB commits | ESPN

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>USC-bound QB Matt Barkley (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei):

"I'd have to say that the depth chart had nothing to do with me committing to USC early. USC always has great quarterbacks on their roster, and great competition at every position," Barkley said. "I was the only 2009 QB that USC was recruiting, so I felt no pressure to commit early."

Barkley added, "I wanted everybody to know that I was going to SC. I wanted to make a statement, and I wanted to try and get as many great players to join me as early as possible. USC was simply where I have always wanted to go to school. Why wait any longer in delaying the process when I could tell the world that I was going to be a Trojan? I knew that I wanted to go the University of Southern California, and I wanted everyone to know."</div>

Football: Saturday is big day for passing tournaments | LA Times

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Summer football passing tournaments have been going full tilt since the second weekend of June, and they reach an important peak moment on Saturday, with big-time teams and top quarterback prospects scheduled to compete in seven-on-seven duels at Huntington Beach Edison, Mission Viejo and Claremont.

The Edison tournament features USC-bound quarterback Matt Barkley of Santa Ana Mater Dei, left. He helped the Monarchs win the Dana Hills tournament last month, and this tournament offers a final glimpse to see how much his new receivers have improved.

Mater Dei will have plenty of competition from Corona Centennial, Chaparral, Los Alamitos, South Hills, Tesoro, Valencia, Orange Lutheran and Santa Margarita.</div>
