<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Arizona Republic reported that Barnes inked a one-year deal worth $1.2 million - the league minimum for a veteran. The newspaper said the Suns are responsible for only $797,000, with the rest “coming from a league fund.”</div>

The Nets couldn't have done any better? Waive Ager (and/or Hassel, if possible), offer the rest of the MLE for a 2 year+ deal to Barnes?

He would have been perfect here, and I'd prefer him to Jarvis Hayes. Young, athletic, and plays hard, esp. on defense. A pretty good shooter too, even from 3pt range. He's a tweener yes, but Frank would have loved his high basketball IQ and tenacity/energy!

Would've preferred Barnes over Hayes, but I think part of the reason he signed so cheap was because it was Phoenix.

I agree this was a nice signing by the Suns.
with Kelenna Azabuike. Mo evans, Najera, even Jarvis Hayes getting way more, I think this guy could have got more too.

But how is Barnes a tweener? what position can he play other than SF ?
Well, I mean, playing some PF on the warriors for Nellie does not make a SF a tweener.
even Stephen Jackson played some PF on the warriors...

Well even for an SF, he's always seemed really skinny to me, and I've watched the Warriors a lot, being from the Bay Area. My point is that he's extremely versatile, and would have been a great fit here.

Surprised Cleveland didn't go for him. Has to be a reason he took such a lower offer with the Suns.

Plenty of teams looking for a guy like him. Especially with Posey gone and Nachbar heading to Europe.

    Strange offseason.

See any other SF's on the Suns who are definitely gonna start next season? ...I think that may have something to do with it. Plus, he'd be playing with Nash, Amare, Shaq - which could mean a potentially great payday next season.

First off, Barnes does not have enough years of service to get a $1.2 million vet minimum contract. If he is making that much, the reporter is wrong or if he is making vet min, than the reporter is wrong on the amount.

As far as Barnes goes, why would he want to come to the Nets?

Wouldn't want Barnes here. Maybe over Hayes but he whines to much from what ever I've heard from him.

So he would actually be making less if he's making the Vet min?

I'd be hoping he'd come to the Nets for more money...

Yes, he would be making less. Here is the link for the vet min salaries per year of experience.

Thanks for the link cpaw, so if Barnes was really making the league min., it'd only be for $926,678.

And for why the Nets would offer him more, I feel like he's deserved it. Although Hayes is cheaper, Barnes is a proven player in this league, unlike Hayes. With all the qualities I mentioned, including his athleticism, defense, shooting, and smarts, he'd be a great fit for Lawrence Frank (who desires "high character, highly competitive, high energy" players).

Well, I think his character might not be as great as others, but he is definitely high energy and highly competitive. He's one of my favorite players, and I think he'll be a perfect fit for Phoenix. If the contracts were the same, I would prefer Barnes over Hayes. But Phoenix has much more to offer him outside of the money - championship potential and the "I'm Shaq's teammate" raise (see the contracts given to guys like Tyronne Lue, Devean George, Udonis Haslem, etc.)

His mother passed away sometime after thanksgiving and before christmas. He still played through it, the best he could. The fans loved him, his energy, his effort anyone that plays with him loves him. He has no character issues off court. He plays through adversity and will never stop hustling. He was on the outside looking in for quite a few seasons. 2nd round pick out of UCLA back in 2002, was part of a highly decorated high school recruiting class at UCLA, (Moiso, Gadzuric), cut in camp, played less than half seasons in 03-04 and 04-05, got a semi-regular role in Philly in 05-06, then Baron Davis got him an invite to Warriors camp in 2006...and well the rest is history.

Joe Johnson, Boris Diaw, and Leandro Barbosa got their own "I'm Nash's teammate" raises as well. Can't count that out.

Tim Thomas too. He got a four-year, $24 million contract.

Given the 3 players, Najera, Barnes and Hayes, if I was going to pick two to pair up, it would be Najera and Hayes. However, if I only had one roster spot to fill, I'd take Barnes.

Hayes is the best shooter of the group and the best at defending SG's. Najera is the best lockerroom guy and Barnes is the jack of all trades.
