Democrat Suzanne VanOrman won her fight against Republican challenger Matt Lindland in the race to take House District 52, according to election returns around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, marking another district that has gone toward the Democrats.

If elected, VanOrman, a resident of Hood River, would replace Rep. Patti Smith, the Republican incumbent from Corbett who is retiring at the end of her term. The district covers large portions of rural Clackamas and Multnomah counties and all of Hood River County.

In election returns for each of the three counties, VanOrman received more votes than Lindland, a mixed martial arts fighter and an Eagle Creek resident. In Clackamas County, voters favored VanOrman by around 54 percent to 46 percent for Lindland as of 9:30 p.m. In the district, voters favored VanOrman by around 58 percent to Lindland’s 41 percent.

VanOrman previously served as commissioner in Oregon City and as executive director of the Mid-Columbia Children’s Council, a nonprofit organization.
