Jake Delhomme's long, slow demise gave the Panthers' starting quarterback job to Matt Moore. Jimmy Clausen's long, slow drop down draft boards might take it away.
Moore, 25, was solid when he replaced Delhomme as the Panthers' starter late last season, going 4-1 in five starts. He tried to downplay Clausen's selection in the second round, saying he had "no reaction" when he heard the news. But he'll likely have some reaction if Clausen, 22, takes his job.

Jimmy Clausen says:
Anything he can do ... "I like Matt Moore's game. I saw him play at Hart High School in California. I saw him play when he was at Oregon State a lot. I saw him play here. I like the way he breaks the huddle, gets out of the huddle quick and makes all his calls quick. He's a fast player."
I can do ... "My accuracy is a big strength of mine, (as is) being a durable quarterback — playing when I'm hurt, being a team leader, bringing teams back in the fourth quarter. I'm just trying to come in and learn as much as I can. I have a lot to learn. It's a similar system to what I played in under coach (Charlie) Weis at Notre Dame. But there's a lot of other stuff to learn, and that's what I'm trying to do right now."

Matt Moore says:
Anything he can do ... "I've seen highlights on ESPN like everybody else. ... I know the kid can play. He wouldn't have started three years or four years at Notre Dame and not be able to play. We'll learn more about him. He played high school football against my brother, but we had never met. The Clausen family is a big name in Southern California, so I had heard a lot about him, but that's it."
I can do ... " Experience is the biggest thing. Being in all those situations, making all the throws, (I'm) going in with confidence, with the way last year ended. Just try to carry that and use it to your strengths . ... Building relationships with the guys, the trust stuff like that — I don't know if I can tell you how it works; it just does. "

A Scout Says:
"Over the long haul, Clausen should be the better quarterback. Moore has good size (6-3, 202) and a decent arm but is still unproven and has not shown that he can lead a team over a 16-game season. I see him as more of a stopgap player who will hold the spot until Clausen is ready. Clausen comes in as a polished kid with good arm strength and experience in a pro-style scheme. I would not force him to play right away, but he has the bigger upside and more overall ability."
