<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Jazz defeats the Mavs, 101-7912:13 AM CST on Tuesday, December 12, 2006By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News SALT LAKE CITY ? It was a night of emotion for the Utah Jazz. And one of demotion for the Mavericks. Coach Jerry Sloan became the fifth member of the 1,000-win club as the Jazz pummeled the Mavericks, 101-79, Monday evening at EnergySolutions Arena, which is named for a nuclear-waste company ? appropriate, considering the mushroom cloud the Mavericks laid. They lost for the third time in five games. And just as the four-game losing streak that started the season has been long forgotten, so has the 12-game winning streak. Their leader is not impressed with their 14-7 record, considering it's 3-7 without that long streak. "We knew even when we won 12 games in a row it didn't mean anything," said Dirk Nowitzki, who had a hard-earned 26 points to go with 10 rebounds. "We knew we had a long way to go and it showed. Detroit embarrassed us pretty much at home. We got embarrassed here pretty good. "There's good halves and good quarters, but we got a lot to work on." The Mavericks have dropped behind San Antonio and Houston in the Southwest Division. They are one of seven teams with seven or fewer losses in the Western Conference. Utah leads the way at 16-5. Carlos Boozer, who had 31 points and 11 rebounds, obliterated the Mavs. The Colony product Deron Williams was mostly efficient with 18 points and seven assists. Utah's defense smothered the Mavs, who made just 3-of-12 shots in the first quarter and never really recovered. They never led and never got closer than 12 points after the middle of the third quarter. And while the night belonged to Sloan, the Mavericks didn't think that had any impact on their showing. "I wouldn't necessarily say outside influences had anything to do with it," said Anthony Johnson, who had 10 points off the bench in the second half. "I think we just got an old-fashioned butt-whipping. They jumped on us from the start, and it lasted 48 minutes." When the game mercifully ended, Avery Johnson went to the Utah end of the floor to congratulate Sloan, a 21-year coaching veteran who has spent the last 19 with the Jazz. "You would hope you could watch this on TV and they could get it on somebody else," Johnson said. "But it was us." Sloan abhors talking about individual achievements of his players, and he likes talking about himself even less. "I'm glad all that's behind us and now we can play basketball," said Sloan, who joined Lenny Wilkens, Don Nelson, Pat Riley and Larry Brown in the 1,000-win club. Amazingly, the Jazz went 26-56 just two seasons ago. But they have rebuilt their team into legitimate contenders, and it showed Monday night. Stability has something to do with it. Since Sloan took over with the Jazz on Dec. 9, 1988, there have been 187 coaching changes in the NBA, most recently Don Nelson's replacement of Mike Montgomery at Golden State. The LA Clippers have had the most turnover, making 11 coaching moves in those 19 seasons. When it was over, the Mavericks pointed to their lousy first quarter as the reason they were victim No. 1,000. "Getting behind Utah at home is a tough hill to climb," Jason Terry said. Added Nowitzki: "We couldn't really get it down to 10 or eight and make it a ballgame. It's awesome for Coach Sloan. But I'm not really happy that we got to be a part of it." E-mail esefko@dallasnews.com NOT EVEN CLOSE Jerry Sloan earned his 1,000th career win, of which almost all have been with Utah. This team is not putting in the effort as they were in that long streak. Getting outrebounded 42-26 is inexusable for this team.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Change your sig first</div> [IMG] This was a bad loss, but it came against a hot team whose clicking and were barely winning the past few games imo. I think our punch off the bench is not very good and we still don't have a consistent 2nd player. Terry has not found his shot or been consistent, and neither has Howard. These guys are more 3rd options then 2nd and that's why we struggle when teams focus on Dirk night in and out.
