As Thursday’s NBA Draft kept unfolding, the Dallas Mavericks had their eyes squarely on three players. But two of them – point guards Jerian Grant and Delon Wright – were drafted before the Mavs were afforded their pick. But the third player, Virginia’s Justin Anderson, was the player who the Mavs were fortunate to draft with the No. 21 overall pick of the first round. And they had a hunch he might be there for the taking. "We thought he might fall because he was hurt the second half of the year, so he didn’t really get a lot of action and that hurt people’s impression of him,’’ owner Mark Cuban said. "But we were stunned and we were thrilled to get him.’’ Anderson averaged 12.2 points and four rebounds in 27.8 minutes per game last season for Virginia. However, he missed the final eight games of the regular season with a broken pinky and appendicitis. The Mavs plan on employing Anderson (6-6, 228) as a combination small forward/shooting guard. They are infatuated with his versatility and believe he can make their rotation next season. "I mean, when you have a guy that's fast, agile, 230, seven-foot wingspan, and a 43-inch vertical, there's a lot you can do if he has basketball skill,’’ Cuban said.
