He's been the best player on a bad team.

The Mavericks are asking Jason Terry to do something much more difficult: establish himself as the second-most important player on an elite team.

There have been good nights and bad in this process. Tuesday was a good one. Terry showed during the Mavericks' 102-93 win over Houston why coach Avery Johnson has placed so much faith him.

"Absolutely," Johnson said after watching his point guard stagger the Rockets with a season-high 29 points. "Jason was looking to score, looking to probe the defense. He was aggressive.

"But again, I would like to see that consistency."

Terry is an explosive player. He's competitive. But consistency has been a challenge.

The player the Mavericks want to lighten the offensive load for Dirk Nowitzki opened the season by scoring 23 and 21 points within a span of 24 hours.

He followed that with only one game of more than 20 points in the next 19 days. Terry averaged 11 points and shot just 31.7 percent from the field in the first three games of this homestand while Josh Howard, Erick Dampier and DeSagana Diop stepped up and played key roles.

Tuesday looked to be another one of those disappointing nights. But with a listless Mavericks team staring at a 12-point deficit entering the final two minutes of the first half, Terry came to life and dragged his teammates along with him.

Terry drilled a 3-pointer from the corner. He picked Rockets guard David Wesley clean in the backcourt and went in for the layup. When the Rockets threw the ball off his leg out of bounds and called a timeout, Terry motioned to the crowd and exhorted them to yell as he walked to the bench.

A few seconds later, he hit another 3-pointer. Terry scored eight points in the final 1:58 to pull the Mavericks within 53-48 at the half.

In the second half, whenever the Rockets threatened to regain the lead, Terry seemed to hit one big shot after another.

"He's got to be aggressive for us, especially with [Jerry] Stackhouse being out," said Nowitzki, who scored 31 points. "We need Jason to be aggressive coming off picks and shooting. That's when he's at his best. If he's floating around trying to get everyone else involved, that's not his game." </div>

This is exactly how I feel. I mean last season in the playoffs against the Suns, we NEEDED him to play with a killer instinct. He couldnt do it consistantly. If he played to score, Dallas would be a that much closer to a championship imo.
