Charlotte Bobcats forward Sean May said Monday he didn't realize he might be violating NCAA rules by speaking with North Carolina basketball recruit Iman Shumpert during an official visit to Chapel Hill in September.

North Carolina is reviewing whether rules were broken during the visit, when Shumpert said he spoke with and played pickup games with May, Bobcats teammate Raymond Felton and Atlanta forward Marvin Williams -- all former Tar Heels players.

NCAA rules forbid representatives of a school's athletics interests from making recruiting contacts.

May said he spoke briefly with Shumpert, but thought it was permissible because May is enrolled as a part-time student at North Carolina this fall. May said Amy Herman, the school's assistant athletics director for compliance, has since told him that only full-time students may talk with recruits.
