Becoming father again keeps game in perspective for Rockets superstar

SUGAR LAND - When we see him, he is T-Mac. He plays the part in the commercials and on the court with the power to perform such wonders, to astonish.

He was T-Mac that night, too. For the first time after days of longing for those gifts to return to him, he was at the height of his powers in what would become a maddening, and yet perfect, revealing irony.

T-Mac chose instead to be Tracy — nothing heroic, nothing special, but something that right then, he had to be.

So he left the game at halftime to be with his fiancée, Clarenda Harris, as she delivered their second child because in the end, being Tracy was better than being T-Mac. And for all those times he had made jaws drop, Tracy McGrady felt his own heart race, his own eyes widen in wonder.

Real life, it turns out, is more amazing, can be more wonderful, than the diversions.

"What is so amazing about it is at work I'm doing what I love to do," McGrady said. "I love basketball. I love entertaining people. But this is family. This is bringing my little man into this world. This is my seed. Basketball, I've been blessed. I'm fortunate to be gifted to play basketball and provide a real comfortable life for my family and myself. When basketball is gone, I'll still have my family. The most important thing is my family. This is why I didn't hesitate to be there for my girl.

"It was a beautiful thing, man, a beautiful thing."</div>

Turns out Van Gundy told him to leave.
